Yes
So last night my computer showed 12 critical updates to install. I started the update then switched off the monitor. Came home tonight and noticed the cooker clock was flashing which is a sure sign I need to go around to reset all the alarm clocks. Pressed the monitor switch, cant remember the exact screen but its showing the blue screen saying theres an error. Ive tried to use hps rescue menu to restore back to a previous backup ( I tried 4 different dates) all the efforts say restore failed 'missing vgx.dll from the restore point' there seems to be an option to reset to factory but that would be major ball ache having to reinstall programmes and set everything up again. It seems the hp restore menu might be slightly different something else I found. I kept pressing f8 started in safemode then somehow managed to find another menu which had a 'restore from image' - I think. If I can some how figure out how to find it again is there any chance it might roll back to a previous restore point ? Tried for 2-3 hours earlier and in the end had to walk away lol. I noticed there are programmes that apparently scan and fix missing vgx.dll files, do they actually need a functioning pc to work........do they even work ? Any help would be gratefully received. It'll be bugging me at work tomorrow knowing I need to somehow fix it.

Cheers Neil, Googling what sfc was sounds good. At the risk of sounding a twerp whats did you mean by having windows media to hand ? I can get in advanced boot menu but when I select any of the safe mode options
Safe mode
Safemode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt
Its seems to be going around in circles.
It does the 'loading windows files' then goes back to the blue screen briefly then back to hp menu, then finally windows error recovery with the option of starting error recovery (which doesn't play nicely) or start windows normally. Out of curiosity do they think it was the actual update that caused the issue or the power cut afterwards ? Im thinking a battery back up jobby might have prevented it ?

I've got to command prompt menu and tried ' sfc /scannow ' it says 'beginning system scan. This process will take some time. There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again' restart goes back to blue screen and same repair pending screen follows. On the menu it shows that its set to 'automatically fix problems that are preventing windows from starting.' If I can some how disable it, might it let the sfc scan work ? Just notice the disc drive plays blurays so thats a proper surprise ha ha

Its only now im not able to use it I realise how often it did get used. Would a professional computer guy stand more chance, or might they even suggest a reinstall ? Seems like system restore is a good idea but shouldn't be relied on - bother lol

As you did not create a windows 7 recovery CD\USB. Find someone who can lend you one. You can boot from it in order to access the computers restore points and set it to a date before the failed updates and all will be will again. Bear in mind when you borrow a system rcovery disks they are specific to 32 or 64bit editions of Win 7 so make sure you use the right one.

A professional IT tech would NOT suggests a reinstall as a first option, they would backup your data first, then try recovery methods which do destroy any of your data. Unless you can find a friend how can help with this it's going to cost well over £100 which you could have saved it you created a rescue disk.

Thanks for the insight redsnappa . If I can get my hands on a rescue disk would this get over it failing to rollback to the other 4 restore points that I've tried ? - all showing the missing vgx.dll thingymejig file error?
I just thought that should the worst happen I could just roll back to an earlier install. I can work my way around a computer, just sometimes slip up on the obvious things- Lesson learned now lol My only immediate concern is the printer head drying up- I might connect the laptop up to print a few pages. It usually takes me ages to set things up on my pc, thats why I dont like change/reinstalls ha

Have you tried this?

you can replace the VGX.DLL file with the original version. You can do this from Windows XP Recovery Console.

Here are the steps:
Insert Windows XP installation CD to your PC and then boot it.
From Welcome to Setup, press R to enable Recovery Console utility.
Choose the Windows XP installation you need to fix and complete the administrator password if it asks. Then the Recovery Console utility appears on the screen.
Type cd system32 when command prompt pops up and press Enter to change to the system32 directory.
Type ren VGX.DLL msderun.old.dll and press Enter to rename the VGX.DLL file.
And then type CD-ROM_or_DVD-ROM_Drive_Letter: and press Enter to point to the CD-Rom drive. Here, CD-ROM_or_ DVD-ROM_Drive_Letter letter points to the drive letter of your CD_ROM or DVD_ROM drive.
Type cd \i386, and then press Enter to change to the i386 directory on the CD.
Type expand msderun.dl_ BootDriveLetter:\windows\system32 and then press Enter to change to extract the original VGX.DLL file from the Windows XP CD and copy it to the system32 directory on your Windows XP computer.

I looked and looked and looked for different ways around the error, some were saying about deleting certain files and then having to reinsert after the fix. If that link also works for Windows 7 I'll try looking more. For some reason im thinking there may have been a disc that came with the pc so will have a look tonight. Thanks for the suggestions, I've got a couple extra avenues now I can try and research. Researching the vx error ended with me having to give up after 3-4 hours. Come the end I felt like I was staring at 'the matrix' screen lol
Cheers ;@)

I just googled your error message and that was one of the first sites with directions. If you would like more info from other sites just try a similar search.

Alot of the sites I looked at were kind of on the subject but not exactly. I went up in the attic last night to try and find the box it came in hoping to also find a cd - no joy.
I need to find out if its 32 bit or 64 then order a recovery cd that matches. I did see there was an option to back up my files, but 55gb just sounds too big. Im guessing the error message must be just a fault with the system and the restore file should be o.k when used with the recovery cd.
Lesson learned, the hard way lol
