Windows 7 KB updates

I've heard updating from the windows catalogue can slow your PC down, thus so far i haven't installed any...but only the critical updates.
Is this wise as i've seen nothing apart from a small report on PcPitstop.com
Has anybody got any info on this ?

Please stop all this MS paranoia. Please update your machine. Nothing will happen except it will be more secure.

I'd review what it's updating though. I'd never let windows update update my drivers. I always go to the manufacturer's website for that, especially graphics drivers.
