Windows 7 File sharing, why so hard?!

The old computer downstairs used to be attached to the printer by cable, and I'd print from my laptop upstairs over a home network connection to it. In addition we had file sharing enabled so as I could work on stuff that was stored downatairs with applications that were only on my laptop and vice versa. That pc died and we've just replaced it, put the old hdd in so I can access old files etc...but I cannot get it to share across the network any more! It flat out refuses to work! Both computers show up under home network from each other, but both say that they don't have permission to be viewed when you try and open them from the other machine!

I have gone through every setting suggested on every help website, answer to similar question etc found on google to no avail. I really can't see why it shouldn't be working and it's driving me nuts!
 
It works OK for me, I find the best plan is to avoid any kind of sharing group and just right click on things you want to share to change settings.
 
Firewall on the machines preventing connection?
 
More than likely to do with permissions that are on the old hard drive, have a google for removing permission on a old drive
 
or delete old (existing) File share options and restart as new!!
