Anyone has this problem whereby the icons on the desktop all revert to left side of the desktop upon reboot?

I have tried a number if things without success, its extremely annoying.

I have unticked auto arrange and align to grid, I have tried refresh desktop after I have arranged my icons. It just doesn't work.

It should save the desktop on successful shutdown. It could be that something is stopping windows from shutting down gracefully? Do you get warned that something is still running when shutting down?

Did it ever work? If so has anything changed since?

Might be worth switching off any background apps (in the system tray for example) as a test.

Right click an empty bit of the desk top. On the menu that appears, look at the "sort by" entry. Does it have anything ticked? If so, untick it.

I'm not sure what this does, but having any kind of automatic sort enabled seems unlikely to help maintain your icons in the same place.

Auto-arrange was what I was thinking of, couldn't find it in the desktop menu in Windows 7 though. Guess it must have been XP.

no warning message on shut downs.

I never used to have a cluttered desktops but have a few icons and a working directory which i wish to group and it has never worked since I have tried to rearrange the icons

all the sorts are switched off. I use align to grid when i move the icons then i switch it off. certainly no auto-arrange. then i click refresh on an area with no icon. but the windows still doesn't save the desktop once it is restarted.

actually i think i might have solved this...i used align to grid to sort the icons. So this time i didn't use align to grid so the icons are free floating and they have stayed where they are when i rebooted. hooray!
