Windows 7 boot up

I'm no computer wiz kid, so I'm asking here.
When I turn my pc off (not sleep) or if we have a power cut. When I turn it back on again, it tries to boot up from the external drive (I'm guessing, because I can hear it whirring away). So I have to turn it off again, unplug the ex drive and start again and all is fine. Now this isn't a major issue, it's just a bit annoying because I always forget to unplug the drive first. I rarely turn the PC off, it's normally just put in sleep mode. So is there a simple way to stop this?

Should be easy enough to check the boot order in the BIOS

Usually just press delete or F1 when you start up your PC.

If the computer cannot find an operating system on the drive it first looks on, it should then look at the second drive in the BIOS list automatically - and then the third, fourth etc. This should not require any attention from you at all.

Unless it's finding/loading/executing something on the external it thinks is valid boot code, but isn't, and that's crashing the system?
