Hi all

A heads up for all Windows users !

Normally windows update is easy peasy i.e. it behaves itself AOK

However, this one (KB5063709) has given me a headache of unknown proportions (at this time ~ for now) in that the update & restart went as anticipated (the Win Update GUI said it had downloaded and was awaiting installing)............................the percentage count got to 7% and did a restart.......................but the screen went black and stayed that way......sat waiting I heard to couple of 'windows notifications bings' and oddly the monitor controls are locked, the monitor GUI will not show and the power button does not respond (I thought I would check the port setting in case it was not 'looking' at the usual port for some arcane reason?)

I left it be for 15 minutes but the 'black screen' was still there. I did a forced restart on the PC box and nothing has changed :(

I will research the issue but in case anyone has some suggestions & insights to throw some light on the matter that would be appreciated :)

Just checked, my ancient Win 10 PC installed KB5063709 without issues on 13/8/25
I'm surprised the monitor is not responding to it's buttons - I know my monitors will respond even if the PC is off (even it it's just to say No Signal), so it's possible you had a coincidental monitor failure.
If you have something else you can connect to the monitor it might be worth trying, so you can rule that out (or if the monitor still doesn't work from an alternate source, you know to get that working as a starting point),

Our Win 10 machine installed KB5063709 on 14th August. No problems that I have seen. The machine has been used for a variety of things since then.

Thanks guys for the replies....

I have found some info about the KB breaking due to an SSD drive issue i.e. if they use a Phison NAND controller it fails. I have Crucial M2 SSDs in the build and maybe they use Phisom?

However, I will need to give it time investigate and initially do a recovery to get back to WRE and/or Safe Mode boot.....if I can?

I currently use a Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse......time to break out the wired versions methinks.

Oh, the so call Black Screen of Death can like the old 'blue' one be caused by all sorts of driver issues..... :headbang: :police:

In regard to the the monitor.................................if coincidental ? Well it was worked at the start of the update process and then 'failed'. Cause & effect seems self evident to me (at the moment!

PS it has been on black screen for some hours now......................forced shutdown next and then 'regroup' so see what I can do
