Hi All

Well I done the upgrade and absolutely hate it with a vengance, computer runs so crap, constantly updating its a right royal pain so.............................

Heres the bad part I am way past the month you have to revert back so have bought a windows 7 disc. my question is......

Is there anything special I have to do to do this, I am backing up all files onto an external hard drive, programs i can delte as i have the discs for so all ok there, there is a possibility I might loose all my favs in firefox but I will write them all down.

So apart from that is there anything else I need to do before doing the re write back to windows 7??

Thanks

If your "Firefox favs" are bookmarks you can export them to a file and import them later.

Some people have had issues for whatever reason (as is the case on almost every software upgrade) but most have found the upgrade to be without any serious issues :)

Question is, are third party programs adapted to accept Windows 10? When Microsoft have done this before such as from Windows XP to Windows 7 it took some time for other third party companies to upgrade their programs, if my memory serves me correctly.. Window 7 is supposed to be supported until 2020 anyway so why the rush to upgrade? by that time Windows 10 will be out of date as well

Microsoft say Windows 10 is the last version of Windows.
I guess it depends on what software you use but all of mine work fine with 10 ... some people report drivers needing updating but its easy to get these from the developer's website :)

depends if you want the upgrade for free within the first year or whether you want to pay £70+ for it later.

for what its worth i dont think personally ive found a single app that does not work on 10 if it did on 7.

Thanks for all the reply's, My favs are all bookmarks so will back those up too.

All my third party programs worked with win 10 its just not very good on my pc for some reason, whilst light room and photo shop are ok its just everything else is slow to find and I just do not like it.

Thanks again

You CAN download the upgrade as an ISO file and then burn it to a DVD for later use if you choose - not sure what happens after a year.

Of course you will have only the latest build so will still have a load of updates when you do install it.
.

If you revert from the onboard recovery it should just reboot as it was before with no need to backup or save anything (but you should be doing that anyway).
I tried the beta of W10 back in January ad there were still some issues on my laptop, reverting to W8 was painless and significantly quicker than installing W10.

Both Laptop and Desktop are on ten now with no problems to speak of.
Programs open significantly faster especially on the desktop with SSD main drive.
I rather like it, and it's definitely better than having one on W7 and one n W8

you only get a month to roll back before the old version gets removed.

it is generally a faster OS. my money is on the OP having some sort of driver issue.

I have a lot of software... Not all photography but to do with web developing and I scared to death some of it is not going to be compatible with v10. Som neat progs for photography go back many years and you can't get them any more.

I have 801 looking like 7 and I like it, when I firs got thins new PC wit 8.1 I hated the GU but soon change it.

I have a feeling v10 will be the same..... Full of totally unecessary windows and crap.

Just too scared.... and it's still beta

back to the OP, have you made sure there are no other updates waiting? there has been a
Cumulative update for Windows 10 version 1511: November 24, 2015
since the big update

good question, the activation servers may or may not let you do it.

generally MS seem to be happy that you have a licenced copy (as with OEM reactivations on new hardware), but who knows.

Why does Windows still bother with activation?

After all they are giving away Win 10 for free - why don't they just give it away and then make the money by selling apps like Apple - after all if a billion people have Windows and they sell each app for about a £1 or £2 then they are still going to make shedloads of money every year.

And since Windows is now going to be a service as far as I understand it they won't ever be selling Windows once we all have Win 10, just receiving updates as and when Microsoft shoot them out (or anyone with Win 10 becaomes part of a huge P2P network and we pass the updates on).

If I understand it correctly Windows 10 is the LAST Windows - in future Windows (as it will be known) is going to be a "service" with continuous updates and no more Windows as a brand new product.

So it will never be out of date.

why? to check it's not a copied (unpaid) key? they're only offering a free upgrade from existing paid copies of 7 upwards.

apple also make money by selling hardware. not just the app store. and besides MS app store is miles behind. apple also offer a limited set of hardware, reducing their development costs from not having to make it work with most other bits of hardware.

you still have to initially purchase windows, just because the updates are incremental now..

as for the P2P updates as you put it, you can switch that off as discussed in another thread.

Apple make their money from hardware not apps - they give away most of their apps to purchasers of the hardware. The App Store is run as a service. They may make some from music an books but I don't think it is much yet.

Microsoft are giving away Win 10 now but they are bound to want money for this "service" in the future because that is where their income comes from. I can't see how Microsoft are going to automatically update all the disparate PC hardware without problems, it works OK with Apple because they make the hardware pretty well stop you from modifying it.

Just reverted back to 8.1, though I may try again in a few months if Dell get some updated drivers out. Although the system seemed stable, the trackpad driver wouldn't run reliably (so no 2 finger scrolling) unless a mouse was plugged in, video driver kept crashing, wouldn't share screens well, problems finding the NAS over the network, excel 2013 was very laggy and lightroom seemed more sluggish than before (surprising considering I was running off SSD instead of cached hybrid) and a legacy app would install but could not access the etwork to register.

Pretty sure a lot of these issues were due to Dell's drivers rather than W10 as such, but until there's something better from Dell I'd prefer to run 8.1
