Win7 or 8? is it worth it?

Our Tesco is selling win 8 upgrade for only £29.95 Is win 8 much better then 7?
I not have touch screen so what I like to know is it bater is it faster?
Anyone?
I've just ordered a new PC and have stuck with 7. Heard too many bad reports on 8. Sticking with what I'm familiar with.

It is faster but a pain to use, save your cash!

I've got a solid state hd as my main drive in my new PC. Apparently that speeds things up. I dunno, I'm a complete dunce when it comes to IT stuff. I'll know when it comes.

when I bought a new laptop last year it came with windows 8, yes like everything it was a pain to start with but now I'm used to it I love
it, I run it just like 7 most of the time but the apps bit is pretty useful as well
Suppose I was fairly lucky I bought from a Sony shop with a very helpful assistant who ran me through it before I bought
The recent free update to 8.1 has made it even better (y)

windows 8.1 runs like a dream. buy it while its so cheap!

I'm using Windows 8 on a laptop that was designed for Windows 7 and released before Windows 8 existed. It uses an i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and an SSD. It's probably about the same in terms of speed as Windows 7 - boot time takes one "swirl" of the circle and most apps open fairly instantly. Internet Explorer's really good, possibly even faster to launch than on Windows 7 and uses less CPU (so causes my fans to race less) than Google Chrome. I don't use the Metro interface, instead I installed Start8, so my Windows 8 installation just feels like a "flatter" more mature Windows 7 with some nifty features (like ribbon in explorer, which I am getting used to) and the occasional intrusion from the Metro interface (i.e. when you click the network icon in the system tray).

For some reason my Windows 8 upgrade cost me £90 or so, everyone else around me seemed to be getting it cheaper and I'd definitely pay what you are getting it for. Stardock Start8 only costs a few quid and looks like the windows 7 start menu but in the native Windows 8 theme. The upgrade was amazingly seamless - and done without media.

Note I am NOT using Windows 8.1 and I refuse to upgrade to it - first off I've heard far too many horror stories of it ruining perfect installations and I don't like the fact that it'll break my current installation of Start8. My laptop also BSOD's very occasionally when returning from standby, I think it's a driver issue but it never happened under win7.

Yeah SSDs make a colossal difference. Hard drives are just so _slow_. I reckon the SSD in my laptop will extend its useful life significantly provided it doesn't break on me - so it's an investment in itself.

Not sure it will make photoshop or lightroom run any quicker, that will depend on the spec of your PC
I would imagine, sure someone more knowledgeable will tell you
I found that with newer cameras creating bigger files my old laptop was slowing down so invested
in a new one which meant I didn't have a lot of option on the operating system if I wanted to stick with Sony
Had no problems with the update to windows 8.1 either, but the I hadn't installed the start programme

I like Win8 - on touchscreen. Not so sure it's ideal on more traditional controls. TBH, I don't use any of the Win8 machines for much beyond browsing and VERY basic editing (using the free PS Express app) so can't comment on the speed of other software - pretty much all my use on them is app rather than software based (if you understand the difference!)
