The remit for the contest was to produce a portrait making the most imaginative use of non-photographic lights. So desk lamps, flourescent tubes, a torch were all okay, but no "proper" photographic lights.

was taken in a warehouse (lights off) which had a cold room in it. standing in front of the cold room (flourescent tube lighting), a shot of the cold room entrance below:

Well I'm having a go at this comp and thanks for putting it up FITP. This is my nearly 15yo daughter Rosie who would love to be a model or an illustrator if she can't make it as a model, yes she is very arty, draws and paints for England. Shot was taken using 2 laptops running notepad :D

Settings 1/5" f5 iso400 she had to keep really still I told her :D

I've got no experience of shooting posed portraits and as far as lighting goes I've only ever used on camera bounced flash before, so I particularly enjoyed having a go at this challenge.

The setup was 2 X 150W halogen worklamps (although one was looking very weak/dim) mounted on a pole suspended over the bath and shining through the white shower curtain as a diffuser. I used the white(ish) bathroom door as a reflector to fill. I did also try throwing a dark towel over the door to reduce the fill but the back of my model's hair vanished into the background.

anyway heres what ive got i saw these "artists" wireing up hundreds of plastic bottles with leds inside they were working under a quite bright but harsh lamp.

so i bounced it of the wall behind him and had him stand over some of the bottles that were allready wired to give some front light shining from below.

had to experiment a bit to get it right as i wanted a catchlight,i could of lightened in photoshop but i like it dark as i saw it.

i shot in b&w as the whole scene seemed monochromatic,

Give it a bump as this comp could do with more votes and show gratitude for FITP's generosity.

I was so surprised that there was so few entries, at least the next one is better attended, I've not done a wedding for a few years so have to miss that one.
 
The difficulty I have is that the key to this contest is IMAGINATIVE use of non-photographic lighting. I'd say that rules out a number of entries as serious contenders, including my own. It doesn't matter whether the results are good or not. If the lighting is cliched or unimaginitive then it should not be getting votes.

With that in mind I shall vote for the most imaginative use of light (IMO), regardless of the success of the resulting image. I hope that is OK.
 
I'm surprised #5 hasn't go more votes, I liked that one.

For me it's a mixture between imagination and how good the shot comes out. If the use of lighting was incredibley original, but the photo itself is just ok then I might not vote for it. On another note I thought your use of equipement was very imaginitive. Not telling you who I voted for *** :D

Thanks Ajop! :) I'm sure it's down to personal preference though. I'm happy with it myself too, but it was faced with some serious competition here!

Congrats Ajophotog! Was definitely one of the most inventive shots in there with a really nice photo as a result of it. Well done :clap:

Congrats Ajo. A well deserving winner, I think, although there was some great competition there as well. A lovely photo :)
 
Thanks Guys, shame it wasn't supported more, and I thought the concept was a really good one. Thanks FITP for your generosity too. I will have to start shooting portraits again now.
