Hi peeps,

Ok, my Really Right Stuff RH-55 is currently at customs awaiting possible custom duty :gag: Anyway, I have a Canon 300mm f2.8L IS and I think the Wimberley Gimbal II head is OTT for a lens of this size, plus I will be receiving a top quality ballhead soon.

My question is: for those who have the sidekick, will this combo be ideal. Are they easy to use and are they extremely strong and well made?

Thanks in advance

I have the same lens, the RH-55, Sidekick & the Wimberley 2. To travel light with that lens AND other lenses its the Sidekick & BH55 they are amply sturdy enough for that lens and a very versatile plus you have the option of using the BH55 on its own. If its a case of the only the 300 coming with me its the Wimberley 2.

The quality of RRS & Wimberley, unfortunately, go with the price tag - they are very well engineered and a dream to use. If you search the various photo forums the only negative comments on these products relate to price not build quality.

My gripe with US import is not so much the import duty and VAT its the 'handling charge' by the carrier!

I use a Sidekick with both 300/2.8 and 500/4. Although I'd like a full Wimberley, I can't justify both and it is great to remove the Sidekick and have a normal ballhead for shorter lenses (in my case the Kirk BH-1). I've found the combo to be smooth and stable...

I have also used the RRS BH-55 and Sidekick on a 500 f4 and it was great handled everything as it should.

Brill, cheers for the re-assurance chaps:thumbs:

Well my BH-55 is STILL at customs and has been there since 7.40pm on Monday. Still no sign of it emerging, so will chase Parcelforce tomorrow for an update. Hopefully no new is good news, as far as taxes and duty is concerned :woot:

Have now placed a reservation on a sidekick which Kerso says is in stock in Scotland and will cost £169 plus £10 p&p, against Warehouse Express price of £235. Today, also purchased a Lens Coat forest green for it:-

Cheers very muchly

Have just checked tracking status of the RRS BH-55 and has finally been released from customs (after 3 days there) with a charge of £68.68:gag: Total price: approx £331

Means I get it for the weekend if I pick it up in person tomorrow and pay the duty at the same time at my local Parcelforce depot.

Are we being ripped off in the UK? :suspect:
