Will these lenses auto-focus on modern DSLR bodies?

Hello

My friend would like to buy a new Canon DSLR but wants to know if they fit on new bodies and if yes, would they AF or MF only?

Lenses are Canon FD 50mm 1.4 and 70-150 4.5.

Which Canon DSLR would you recommend? I'm a Nikon-person and got no idea about Canons.

Thanks!

I think they'll fit on if you get an adapter...but only in mf. That was before Canon turned all electronic. Even though its old, I think the 30D is excellent :)

I believe that they can be fitted but you will lose the ability to focus to infinity. As such, with the exception of macro work, they are probably useless.

But I am quite willing to be proven wrong.

Thanks, I think they might work on non-EOS bodies on MF which would be fine I guess. The 30D goes for around £300 on eBay. Is this a realistic price? My friend was more looking at £200 second-hand but again, I don't know if that's realistic as no clue with regard to Canons.

You would be struggling to pick up anything worth while with a budget of £200, even secondhand. Yes you can get camera's for less than £200, but what about lenses, as the lens mounts on the FD lenses aren't compatible with the new EF bodies without an adapter http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-manual-lenses/ have a read and see if its worth the effort.

Personally, I would recommend save up a few more pennies...., maybe double if not triple his current budget to get something worth while.

Because of the lens situation, perhaps brand loyalty for canon might not be the way to go, have a look at the other makes, Sony / Olympus offer more affordable packages, nikon etc
