I Have a Conon 30D, with a Canon 100-400 IS AF lens, fantastic combination! I recently bought the 2x converter, and now the AF doesn't work, I have been told that it will on the 1.4 converter. Can anyone clarify this?

A 30D will not AF with less than f/5.6 so the short answer is no. Some teleconverters don't tell the camera they are there, at which point the camera will still try to AF but it will be slow and innaccurate in all but superb light.

As grumpy said, it will not AF with a 1.4x Canon Extender, but it might (slowly and badly) with an different brand.

And it would work if you upgraded to a 1D. ;)

If you use a Kenko 2x Teleconverter, taping the last 3 pins will allow you to auto focus (in suitable light)

As the others have said the answer is no I'm afraid, but if you get the 1.4 Tc you get the great joy of having to manual focus ( no, no I mean it), and there is little impact on the IQ
