Yes
Although I intend on getting a wireless setup, I was wondering in the interim would i be able operate the flash off camera from canon 7d when using a Lastolite Ezybox Hotshoe ?

What flash do you have?

The 7D can act as a wireless transmitter for the EX series of flashguns so I can't see any reason why not.

I've used my old 7D wireless with a Canon 580EXII without triggers before, if I remember correctly it was using the on-board pop-up flash as the trigger.

Yes, the 7D pop-up will trigger it, with full E-TTL control - but the receiver needs to get a decent 'look' at the pop-up. Preferably line of site, though indoors it will work almost anywhere; outdoors in bright sun it can be unreliable at best, or useless.

Basic radio triggers are so cheap though (eg Yongnuo RF-602 £25 a set) that it's hardly worth messing about. Manual only of course, but that's often the preferred mode for OCF anyway.
