Will 4k 15fps camera work for my needs?

Instagram model, been sharing my friends camera for a while but looking for my own camera for my Instagram photos and came across the Nikon 1 J5. It only shoots 4k video at 15fps.

I want to shoot my photos in 4k video then convert the video to images for a high resolution and model like photo quality.

Obviously I'll just be posing for the video in stationary still positions. So the fps shouldn't make much difference should it?

As said I'll just be starting the 4k 15fps recording then, cycling from one pose to another, extracting to high resolution images and deleting most of the extracted images. Keeping just one or two pictures from each pose.

Would this work for my needs?

Also will the standard 10-30mm lens work fine? Or should I invest in an additional lens?

Also curious if I will get a more professional quality image by shooting in 4k 15fps and converting to high resolution images or if the quality would be better just taking standard photos with the Nikon 1 J5?
 
the Nikon 1 has a very small sensor and basically was a flop .. I'm not even sure if its still available ..and no I dont think it will do what you require

Thank you, that likely saved me buying the wrong camera!

I don't have a great deal of knowledge regarding cameras and photography equipment but I am learning as I go along.

So I can educate myself on this, could you go into further detail on how the sensor size actually effects video quality when recording in 4k? I always thought 4k was 4k in regards to quality. Of course I know that fps greatly effects the end result when shooting an actual moving object.

Do you have any recommendations for a budget friendly 4k camera? That I can then convert the footage to images.

As I take all my photos myself I find it easier to simply start recording then extract the images from it.
 
something along the lines of a panasonic g80 with 12-60 lens would be ideal

Stills from a video are not going to match still from a proper still camera. Whether the quality of video "grabs" is good enough for what you want depends on what your expectations are and how well Instagram handles pics (I don't do antisocial media)
As for sensor size a rough guide is the bigger the sensor the better, it might still be 4k but pixel size and density affect the result.

I think Panasonic made a big thing of capturing stills from video not so long ago but as I'm not interested in video I can't remember the details. If anyone does maybe they could comment on stills from video quality or if no one here has done it Googling may provide something useful.
 
A lot of cameras will shot still pictures in a resolution significantly in excess of 4K.

Unless you have a specific reason of picking a single frame from video, you'll get higher quality shots from a single shot from a dSLR or mirrorless camera.

They did. The LX100 has a 4K capture thing, where you can extract stills from a video sequence. I only played with it for a minute out of curiosity as it's not my thing, but IQ is pretty good considering the method. I assume their other units from then on include the same feature.

How does the Panasonic G7 with 12-60mm lens compare with the G80? Comparing both cameras each with the 12-60mm lenses, particularly interested in the difference of the quality of the still images and 4k video between both cameras? Is the difference noticeable when using the 12-60mm on the G7?

I know the newer G80 has far better image stability but I'm not too worried about that as i will be shooting everything from a tripod.

If either the G7 or the G80 comes with one of the click shoot remotes that would be a big plus. Or if either camera is at least compatible with a remote control that can be purchased separately. As with a remote control i could take still shots instead of extracting the images from 4k video.

Are the shots from the Panasonic G7/G80 considerably higher resolution than the 4k video? Thanks :)

the g80 remote control is the RW221RX mine cost sub £20 on e.bay ..
 
Could I ask the reason for 4K or even extremely high quality stills ?

As I’m aware insta allows a maximum of 1080 pixels and doesn’t support 4K.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m far from a insta user but I dabble a tiny bit and notice I have to re size and re-sharpen and edit the death out of my dslr pics to work and look any good.
 
Not sure why you would want 4k stills but you could look at this

 
If I'm reading this right you want to extract stills from video because you intend to start the video, get into shot and pose then go back to the camera and stop the video then choose the best still?
You could do the same thing but with higher quality using a remote shutter release or a WiFi camera with app control.
4K video resolution is 3840 x 2160 pixels - a 16MP image from my Olympus E-M10ii is 4608 x 3456 pixels.
My Olympus E-M10ii can shoot 8.5 frames per second at that resolution and it's not a particularly modern camera.

My camera also has built-in WiFi control - so you can see on your phone what the camera sees in real time and press the shutter.
You can also transfer a web friendly sized image directly then upload to instagram.
I'm sure lots of modern cameras have similar or better features.

Olympus target their PEN range of cameras at bloggers and instagramers - you might find one of their cameras suits you.
They have selfie friendly touch screens that you can flip to face you when you're in front of the lens.

if you want high resolution and model like photo quality then you are approaching this absoloutly the wrong way.. you won't achieve this by taking 4k video and grabbing stills

Your post is a little confusing as it does read that this si the ONLY thing you want from the setup.. you don't mention using the video for anything else.. just a few HQ shots.. thus i reapeat if thats what you want then the way your going about it is poor and won't get what you need..

Maybe more info ? :)
