We've recently done a few wildlife video's with my younger brother (12) as part of a project he did for school. A few of them contain some alright footage so might perhaps be of interest. Any comments or suggestions very welcome.

I've used a combination of my footage and footage of Oliver and then stuck it in IMovie and let him voice over the top of it as he wants. The Reptile one is probably my favourite.

Here is the youtube channel they are on:

I sometimes shot a bit video between taking pictures, and every time I realise just how much I don't know about the art of cinematography... (that and getting usable sound.)

I'd say those are pretty watchable. My only suggestion would be to keep an eye on those horizons.

Good stuff Alex and well done to Oliver. Always lovely to see younger ones taking such an interest in such things (y)

The reptile one's sound was a disaster, the boom mic picked up the motorway about half a mile away and it seemed so much louder than it actually was... in hindsight i would have done all of the pieces facing the other direction.

Like you say there a lot of work to do to get good at cinematography, the majority of these clips were filmed in amongst taking stills too.

Sound is my weakpoint! A large portion of my video is done from a hide, so all the inbuilt microphone ever picks up is me fidgeting about! I end up posting my videos sans sound. I need to invest in an external microphone I can dangle out the window, but it's not been enough of a priority for me. Of course, a lot of sound in profession wildlife films is the result of a level of creative licence, it being difficult to record sound at a distance.

This is what i use:

I found them to be pretty good, they pick up sound over a surprisingly long distance. Using this it records it directly on to the footage too which can be handy as its already synced up.
