I thought we should have a thread where we shared our New Year's Resolutions in terms of wildlife photography.

What are the species you have at the top of your list to capture this year?

It could be anything from a woodland or garden bird of which you just dont yet have that perfect shot, or it could be to go to a seabird colony for puffins, gannets and the like. Or perhaps it's a certain bird of prey you would really like to photograph? Anything and everything goes!

We could even revisit this at the end of the year to see where we all got to! :D

I want to get a decent wild boar shot. I've got a good idea of the routes they use so I'm aiming to get set up under a camo net before dawn once it gets a bit warmer and sit and wait. There'll also be a fairly good chance of deer, badgers and foxes coming along but it's the boar I want.

For me it would be to get some better shots of the local (not Mull) White Tailed Sea Eagles.

Up to now I've only managed distant 'flying' shots from the garden. It's partly a game of luck but I can certainly improve my chances by being a bit more disciplined when it comes to carrying my camera more often.

Mine has to be a fox.

I have been photographing the wildlife in my garden in my 52 for this year. I have one day left to complete the 52 but still no fox photo. One sauntered across my front lawn this morning in broad daylight, but no camera handy :(

2011 - I have 3 main targets;

Red kite
Wild Harris Hawk - need to go to Arizona for this one
Pine Martin

Just to have the opportunity to get out and do some photography, spent the last 9 months working on the house, but now 99% done the last 1% can wait, roll on the better weather

I have a few targets
Personal wish list
Close shot of Melenistic Montaque's Harrier - Spain
Chinese Water Deer & Close up Roe Deer- UK
White Tail Sea Eagle fishing - Mull June/July
Golden Eagle - Mull June/July & Spain
Short Toe Eagle hunting - Spain (This would be fantastic but highly unlikely but plans have been drawn up)

I have also been given a calander of british wildlife and father in law has challanged me to photograph all 13 species. I am allowed one substitution.
Puffin, Red Deer, Otter, Rabbit, Mallard, Red Squirrel, Otter, Fox, Badger, Grey Seal Pup, Tawny Owl, Gannet, Hedgehog & red Kite.
Dosen't sound to hard but 3 are a challange and seeing as I have never seen a live Badger that may be my sub

Long Eared owl, Otters, Any Bird of Prey :) lol and a decent fishing Kingfisher shot !!!!

Off to Shetland and Mull this year as well :)

Lol ... I really thought you'd have one of them, I'm nearly shocked to hear that Ian. ;)

I anit even got a blur of one I must add.

Mines pretty simple, much as Id like to go take it seriously and get out for the really wild stuff, Id be happy with my foxes coming back into my garden ...maybe a foxy mum with a cub in her mouth ... or anything with cubs in cos there so cute at that age and pretty horrific when they grow up.

Firstly the Chinese Water Deer that came in ours and next doors garden last summer along with one or both of the black Squirrels that visit

Firstly to actually get out of the front door and take some pictures :bang:

It would be nice to get something in the garden other than Robins as well (see my flickr and you will see the problem)

My main aim though for 2011 is to capture a Kingfisher at Lackford lakes so we will see how things go on that one.

I'm currently sat looking at a RSPB Christmas card showing a puffin landing as captured by Danny Green. I would LOVE to capture something similar.

Out of interest, I have just booked a week in the Lake District for mid-July. I know it is a bit off-topic but could anyone recommend good wildlife spots in the Lakes ?

Wishing all happy shooting in 2011.

Leighton Moss is good (RSPB Reserve) but even with a 600MM prime and Teleconvertors you can still be too far away

BIF will be a barn owl, just a case of putting the time in but thats all part of the challange :)

Thanks for the tip. We will be driving past Leighton Moss so, I think, a detour will be in order. Providing the light is ok I use a 100-400L with a non-reporting x2TC for wildlife so have reasonable FL. That said, I am seriously thinking of renting a 400f2.8 or 600f4 for the week anyway.

Thanks again for the tip.

Well Joe, some semi decent diving Kf shots are what I would like if nothing else. You say I got a year for this mission?

Mine would have to be barn owls.. seen my first one in jan of this year.. so hope to get some shots of it..:-)

Well I've just bought a new lens for the whole purpose of taking something a little bit more wild. At the moment I've only managed a decent shot of robins and that was walking around a zoo practising with new kit last Friday in the snow. I'm just happy to have that bit more reach so more possibilities.

I could quite happily spend hours watching wildlife so my resolution is just to make sure I get the most out of the money I've spent even if all I end up with is a Bluetit in focus at the end of the year.

Species for me, Red Squidgers, Fox, Sea Eagle, Buzzard, Kestrel, Marsh Harrier, Otters.....

I dont want much really :D

On a MKIV a 400 or 600 with a TC should work. There's one hide in particular that is good for the Marshies though its a test of patience, you can be there for 3-4 hours and they will stay right on the otherside of the water but i have always seen them from fairly close.

You might even get lucky from the hides round the back of the visitor centre, last visit there the Marshies were regularly there, in fact i had a 400 on a MKIII and chopped wings off :bang: Also from the same hide you can spot Red Deer

I don't have a list of anything I want to shoot - I will happily shoot whatever presents itself. For me, my photography is just an excuse to go out and watch wildlife. But saying that I will be taking special interest in some creatures that I have been enjoying the past few years: The house sparrows that nest in my house, the woodpeckers that come and feed in the garden, the otters and water deer at Strump, but above all one particular heron at Strump - the more I learn about herons the more they impress me! There are loads of species I have never seen let alone photographed, but I cannot be bothered to chase after them when there is so much to learn from the stuff which is already in front of me!
