I've recently moved to Cambridge and was interested to know of any good places to go visit for wildlife photography.

Many Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard and welcome to Cambridgeshire. What sort of wildlife are you into ? You could try Linton Zoo, Hamerton Zoo, Wicken Fen, Woodwalton Fen, or RSPB at Sandy, Fowlmere, Fen Drayton and Lakenheath Fen. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this, I actually tried Linton Zoo yesterday and was the whole reason for this thread. I was really disapointed, they seemed to have a policy of caging all the animals with the smallest gague wire fencing possible. I will definatley try the other venues on you list. Usually I prefer to try and photography wildlife in its natural environment. I think I will try and get to Fen Draton this afternoon.

Think the above poster has mentioned pretty much everything I can think of apart from Shepreth Wildlife Park, I got some nice shots of Otters there

Fen Drayton is in a bit of upheaval lately with all the misguided bus works going on

Bit further afield is the RSPB at Welney or Paxton Pits near St Neots.

Seems to be a fair collection to have a look at,not very scenic though apart from Sandy which is a bit hillier

The zoo at Shrepreth isnt too far (out towards royston on the A10) and is ok for photography though pretty small. RSPB at Sandy is recommended by me too.

Fen Drayton is a good venue but as a big site, can be a bit hit and miss. The marsh harriers were excellent earlier in the year but since the chicks have fledged they are a bit more hit and miss.

Welney is superb for the whooper swans in winter. There are some good spots for hares south of Cambridge but again probably best in the spring.

Woodwalton Fen and the Great Fen project are also worth a visit.

Milton Country Park can be good for grebes.

For captive stuff, the Raptor Foundation near St Ives is also worth a visit.

Might be a travel but i recomend whipsnade they go for pits not cages and they have alot of animals roaming free around the grounds inc, monkjacks, deer, rabbits, joeys among others

If you head over towards Corby, the area around Finshade woods is where the Red Kites where reintroduced, bred successfully, and are now in abundance there.
