Don't know if anyone else entered the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the year competition (run by Natural History Museum and BBC).

This was the first year I decided to have a go and I'm quite pleased to have got 2 images through to the semi-final stage - already thinking about next year for another go.

Images that got to semis were:

1. Elephants Sparing (in the Creative Visions of Nature category)

Taken in Kenya's Amboseli National Park - January 2007. EOS 1D Mark II and EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS

2. Lesser Flamingos on Lake Amboseli (in the Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Species category

WPOTY-11.jpg

Again in Kenya's Amboseli National Park in January 2007. EOS 5D and EF 400 f/4DO IS + 1.4x

Also some others that didn't make the cut (but that I still like)

3. Lion in Storm (in the Animal Portrait section)

WPOTY-1.jpg

6. Meerkat Security (in Animals in Their Environment section)

WPOTY-9.jpg

Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana. June 2006. EOS 1D Mark II and EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS (this is a personal favourite of mine as I spent many happy hours tracking these guys on foot)

7. Leaping Leopard (in Animal Behaviour - Mammals section)

WPOTY-12.jpg

Masai Mara, Kenya. January 2007. EOS 5D and EF 400 f/4DO IS + 1.4x

8. Nest Building Secretary Bird (in Animal Behaviour - Birds section)

I hope you enjoy. Any comments/criticism gratefully received. I'll be back in Africa in September to try and grow the portfolio further.

:agree:

Takes some guts to enter these comps... Very well done that man.

Those are fantasic, hard to pick which i like most.

Great set, all excellent shots. Well done on the Semi's.

Congrats on getting into the semi's I must admit the "lion in a storm" is my favorite.

Thanks guys. I do rather like the soggy lion one. It's different to a lot of the bright sunshine stuff you see on the Mara.

No images showing here :(

Nor here atm Robert, although they worked fine for me earlier today.

From memory, "Lion in a Storm" was my fav too, although all were very good imo! Well done gb!

Well done  Great set, the lion shot for me too, and the Giraffe passing stands out for me as well :)

Nice images there, well done.

I must admit Kenya is one of my favourite places.

That reminds me i must get the rest of those '000s of images scanned from film (back in the day) I havent been on safari with a digital setup, all my times were with the film setup.

Plan to visit this year's exhibition when it comes to Cambridge next month. Have to say that I am still along way of the people that inspire me most - the Shah brothers and Jonathan and Angie Scott for example.

Still, the fun is in trying. Back to Kenya in September so should have some more options I hope.

mho - I'm still working through the back catalogue of slides but enjoy going out and taking pics more!

Hey, congrats.

I got 4 into the Semi's myself. will have to think about entering stuff for next time round :) entered 8 or 9 so wasn't a bad result. Want to try some animals next time.

here's mine

Blimey Mr Grumpybadger! I take my eye off the ball for a few days and you go and get yourself shortlisted in a rather high profile competition.

Well done old chap! :D

But, there's no accounting for taste with these judges because my fave is the Meerkat. :)

WOW - awesome pics of African wildlife.

I am soooo disappointed I didn't have my new camera with me when I was also fortunate to have been there recently. I have a Nikon Coolpix stolen out of my luggage case from the airport as I arrived and I only noticed this when i arrived at my hotel.. :(

I purchased a cheap replacement when I was there, but it didn't do the locations I went to and the animals I was fortunate to see any justice at all in my pics. If I eventually become brave enough, I may post a few sometime.

Great pics here though... superb giraffe shot!

Congrats from me too! I love that Lion in a Storm too.

Seems you have a dedication to your photography, which shows in the shots
