Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2012

I am not a wildlife photogrpaher.. but have to say.. the winning picture is not what I expected.. not exactly taken aback by it either..I like underwater stuff but...

Second one is interesting and deffo a loverly photo.. but winning such a big award? hmmm

at least its not a captive wolf jumping over a gate

wasnt the year before a trap cam of a snow leopard ? and the year before that a gorilla in a zoo with a kid looking at it through the glass - judges have lost the plot imo

To really appreciate these images you need to go to the exhibition. The presentation is quite different from what you see on the web.
There are so many other photographs to see not just those shown here, in particular some of the younger contributors have produced worthwhile images.

is the kite a worthy winner in your opinion, or were there better shots?

Seconded, I've seen the last two years exhibitions as they've travelled around and some are stunning when reproduced large.

I think the camera trap of the tiger is excellent, really like the black and white of the hare in the ploughed field.
I really like the gull in Canary wharfe, as it's taken somewhere accessible and doesn't rely on exotic locations.

Both superb shots in their composition, thinking and overall execution. Whether they are my favourites I will wait until I have seen the whole exhibition to decide. However, it is no surprise that provoking and unconventional images get a thumbs down on here. Just go into the birds section and see parade of people gushing over technically good but achingly dull tit on stick shots.
