Hi,

I'm thinking aload a bit here but if anyone could advise I'd be grateful :)

I have a Canon 90D and Sigma 150-600mm, I struggle with low light photography and AF(speed and some times accuracy)
would an upgrade help?
Body/lens/both?
Wildlife is local woodland birds etc..but trying to get the owls, foxes and deer are proving difficult.
Have seen a few 1DX bodies popping up, is this over kill for hobby use?
Would the sigma hold the body back?

Thanks for the input, I'm going to keep going as I am for now but will look into the suggestions for referance (y)

Thanks

Gav

I had a sigma sport 150-600 on Sony a99 DSLR. Now I moved to a Sony a7Riv and Sony 200 -600mm and never looked back.

Expensive though but a fantastic wildlife set up and with Sony a7Riv I can push the ISO TO 5000 and still get a usable image Gav

Les :)

All depends on budjet i would go mirrorless. Full Frame canon r5 or r6 or sony with the mc11 adaptor . the Sigma is s great Lens but people do says it suffers in Low light. , iused one with a sony. for a while but then bought the sony 200-600.

Lots of. Owl. Pics on my Flickr. with the Sony lens and Sigma. Lens

Gav explain to me why deer owls and charlie fox are difficult for you..........do you put yourself in the right spot? Male images and are dissapointed Can you push the ISO and process that?

You could try the R6 before you buy with EF to RF Adapter with your current lenses and see if the animal EY Auto Focus helps.

Hi Stu, I think I need to push ISO and work on the editting, only real reason for struggling is the local wildlife is very skittish as the land is used by dog walkers and the local youngsters cause a few issues, plus the hare coursing issues here :(
So getting the right spot is tough.

Thanks, I think that'll be the next step, but will try pushing harder on the ISO first (y)

Thanks for the input everyone, I'm going to keep going as I am for now but will look into the suggestions for referance (y)

Massive hare coursing issues here too Gav, not sure yet but think my hare spot miight be trashed, forgiive me if I weep. it's the gambling bro massiive money it's no longer a guy with a dog, a pot hunter, it's turned into a whole other beast entirely, which might spell the demise of europeas.....soz mate I digress but it's personal to me .......... you'll get that

Gav very simply better gear will enable you..but you have to put yourself in that situation with said subject ha ha and THAT light....Mate it is very very hard the right spot is an astoundingly tough gig. Put your self there bro then grab the seductive gear.

Oh god mate hope that don't sound harsh it's what I say to me. Gav I got better gear it didn't make me any better it does allow me to squize a tiny bit more from a situation, but if i' ve blown it the best gear in the world won't help

Sorry to hear that, it's getting steadly worse here, police are using 4x4s and motorcross bikes with very little impact on the activity :(

I totally under said your view, I do feel I should probably push my gear harder and try to get my confideance up to get out even if people are about.

Also need to improve my editting skill ;)

Thanks for taking the time to answer (y)

My keeper mate said the law is going to be strengthen Gav, let's hope that helps the situation, and also hope I'm wrong about just how hard my little patch has been hit. Of course little impact ..the HUGE money and the web Gav on an overstretched work force :( :banghead:

Gav why not speak to a few landowners... ask for permission...... also stress how you'll look after the place and report things that are untoward..................even though I wasn't entering the land years ago I made myself known to the gamekeeper,so he didn't have to worry about me being dressed like a tree ( oh and lookiing dog ruff  )

....I understand your confidence around others and also how much others can impact chances Gav.......the best way around that is having a tiny spot where not to many others can go

and then my friend you get your head down and learn every sign of who goes where. beastie wise...but you aren't shackled by worrying

You are VERY welcome mate........... Gav..everyone else focused on the gear and don't get me wrong it helps, but I wanted a different tack for you to ponder.

Oh and no mate a 1DX is not
overkill for a hobby guy if ya can find the pennies and frankly having seen some of the stunning images posted here by your siggy I would make a wild guess the two will work well.....Gav the 1d series have those big batteries that means faster AF. I moved from a 550D to a 1Div, the difference in speed of AF was huge with a 300 f 2.8 when adding extenders the difference became bigger..Sure I upgraded again later to tools I'll never really feel worthy of, but damn they work well ...ok If I've got my head straight and do my bit

all the luck in the world buddy don't be phased by no's be very polite and go and ask if ya get a no go ask someone else

Don't talk to me about editing
take care mate

Hi Stuart, good to hear laws may shift, but as you say the overworked force can't keep up :(

I think I need to pluck up some confidence and speak to the local farmers and stable owners, one owl lingers in the paddock, again they had issues with a group after a stud horse, so that was another reason to avoid the area :(

Thank you for the photo complement (y)

I will push on as I am for now but a 1D... is tempting :ROFLMAO:

Thank you again the info and taking time to offer advice, hope your patch is ok (y)
