Just a thought kicking around my head that I thought might be worth investigating. My 10 year old son is nature/wildlife obsessed. Loves going to nature reserves etc. Normally takes binoculars but is starting to express an interest in taking some photos. I think this is very much a record keeping thing rather than for art.

I'm pondering whether one of the crazy zoom bridge cameras might be good for him? But it's a sector of the market I know nothing about and as I'd be buying used, it's really quite hard to understand what options are out there. I think ease of use and good stabilisation would be key. Ultimate image quality probably not such a big deal. I suppose portability is a factor too but I assume most of these big tele bridge cameras are quite chonky?

Probably looking at £200 tops.

I have in the back of my mind that an old DSLR with a cheap 70-300 is an option but the bridge options maybe sound more appealing.

Advice greatly appreciated.

Hi....in the Nikon Classifieds , I have

an excellent Nikon D90 (lightweight for a child) complete with 2 batteries, charger etc etc
and a Nikon 28-70mm AF D
both at REDUCED prices

should you desire any other lenses, I'm also considering selling
a Nikon 18-55mm VR
a Nikon 55-200mm VR
and a Sigma 70-300mm 4-5.6 APO DG

any interest in these 3 and I'll pop an advert in the ''For Sale''

Thanks @Yardbent . I'm probably still thinking bridge camera at this stage but have to admit it would be nice to get some thoughts from users as it's very tricky picking through what is what.

In an effort to narrow the goal posts a bit and following a little homework, I think broad requirements are going to be:

600mm or more equivalent reach
Good IS
USB charging
Easy to hold and use for small hands
