Hi all, I'm planning on getting the sigma 100-300mm f4 used, and sticking a 1.4x tc on it. This will be used on a Nikon d7100 which has a 1.6x crop factor, and then a further 1.3x crop factor available , which would turn this set up to 'basically' a 250-800mm f5.6.

Now, would this be ok for birding etc? Anybody experienced with this lens & tc's , and is it ok without vr?
And also, is this long enough?
Thanks in advance

Have you considered the Sigma 150-500mm??

I use this lens its brilliant and it has buit in OS, cheap enough 2nd hand

The 100-300mm is a good lens- I had one + 1.4 TC I sold them in favour of the 150-500mm

Shot with the 150-500mm

I have considered the sigma, but it's not very fast and normally not very sharp, what's your experience with this?

fast enough for wildlife / Birds etc and @ f8 sharp as a tack - Its ok Im not trying to sell you one :lol:

Just so you know it's a 1.5x crop or 1.3x crop on your camera not one plus the other or at least that how I've understood it so at 1.3x you'd actually be seeing the subject smaller in camera so best to keep it at a full crop :)

The 1.3x crop is in addition to the automatic dx crop

I do stand corrected as I've just re-read the spec sheet

I can say however don't dismiss the 150-500 it really is a cracking lens and quite robust too

I use a sigma 150/500 on a Nikon 7100 and can't fault it. took this with it of a tern feeding it's young, they move quick, it's quite a heavy crop as well

The d7100 is 1.5x crop at 24mp and yes you can add the second crop to make it 1.95x but your now at 16mp. Yiur better off cropping in pp unless your using the 2 croos thwn pulling back to get a lower f stop.

O I almost forgot to add the 2nd crop helps the buffer also as the files are smaller but I personally thing 6shops at 6fps is enough and with a 95mb card youll be fine at dx crop

thats right it would be 1.5 due to crop sensor (150-450 f4 24mp) and 1.95 in 1.3 crop mode (roughly 200-600 f416mp).add a 1.4 tc and you can multiply them by 1.4 (630 and 840 at f5.6). but lose a stop of light.

You have just repeated what I said :s
