According to the new 50 Years of Wildlife Photographer of the Year book that has just been published, Wild Life at Home: How to Study and Photograph it by Richard and Cherry Kearton became the bible for wildlife photographers when it released in 1898.

Via the power of the Internet and the expiration of copyright, you can browse and download copies from archive.org. So no excuses for the incorrect descending of cliffs.... (note: the google PDF link doesn't work, you'll need to click All Files: HTTPS, and select the pdf option from there)

Also mentioned is the snappily titled Nature and the camera; how to photograph live birds and their nests; animals, wild and tame; reptiles; insects; fish and other aquatic forms; flowers, trees, and fungi by A.R Dugmore (published 1902) via archive.org.
