Wild dogs

5 different times I've been bitten this year. Hate dogs, but I guess I was on their territory, so...

I'd still report that - dangerous dogs act and all that. Unless you provoked or goaded the dog but IMHO what happened to you is unacceptable.

I cannot stand dogs either, for once you and I have something in common :D

That makes 3 of us - not a dog fan at all. Bitten by a large alsatian belonging to a friend's family when I was a small boy.
Same happened to me. My parents decided that the best way to conquer my fear was to get a dog and I thank them for it, I grew up and still am a dog lover.

I'm not afraid of them, nor a 'hater' but I also don't like them.

Me too to be honest I don’t like or really trust dogs am more a cat person
It’s the owners that’s the issue fed up with big dogs running at me when I’m out with my camera in parks and by the river
The owner always say oh he’s friendly but still don’t want the bloody thing jumping all over me
But most dogs and their owners are ok just a minority that’s a problem

Perhaps on the whole and my experience of dogs is nothing like as extreme in the article but I have to say as a collective I find dog owners highly inconsiderate of others. The usual crap they spout like "he/she never has done this before" or "he/she just wants to play" or "don't worry he/she won't bite you" gets tiresome. Keep the thing on a short lead and then the dog bothers no one.

I'm a dog owner and have always been very happy with them; they are, in general, a delight, but I agree with you completely.

There is no excuse for someone's dog not being under control - on a short lead, a long lead or under voice control.

Unfortunately, some owners let their dogs off a lead and think being under voice control means their dog returns to them when it is finished what it wants to do.

In the vast majority of encounters the dog does not intend any harm and is, as owners often say, "just being friendly". However, that is not an excuse for someone feeling intimidated in any way by a dog.

I have no direct memory of this but I was told I was attacked by an unknown dog which shredded my coat when I was a toddler and that said dog was killed by our family dog (said to be a husky cross - doubt that but indicates largish). I didn’t grow up with any fear of dogs but the family mostly had dogs, as I do now :). There are more dangerous things than dogs (people for instance) and I daresay in Siberia they keep the wolves away :).

I'm a dog lover, and have always had a dog.
Doesn't mean I'd not be slightly worried if a large out of control dog was to approach me.
I've been bitten twice, and both times it was by small dogs.

For a moment I thought I had come into TP's dog haters anonymous club :ROFLMAO:

Been bitten in three places by neighbour's dog which wasn't fun. But still I don't hate them. Also small more excitable dogs make me more wary than the large well behaved ones.

When I was child we had couple dogs around.
More recently one of my past local pub owners had a very nice great Dane. Their size is a bit intimidating but he was lovely to have around.

I see dogs a bit like children. They are only nice when they are yours. I have no false ideas about my 3 year old being cute or fun for anyone else having to put up with him antics.
Same way uncontrolled dogs with rubbish owners I don't like. As long as they are kept away from me and/or well behaved I don't mind them. Same goes for their children lol :p

Difference is a large out of control dog can knock you to the ground and do real damage to you. Even a well placed kick won't make much of difference on a large aggressive dog. Whereas a small dog's bite is a) less severe in terms of physical damage (still best to get to the doctors ASAP for relevant jabs as dogs can carry nasty illnesses) and b) if you kick it as if you are taking a penalty kick at a world cup final it won't be coming back for a second bite.

That said - not everyone is a dog lover so it is always advisable to consider this when out with your dog. Not everyone will want to be near it. I tend to cross the road if I see someone coming with a dog, on the lead or not. It gives them more room and affords me the chance to not have to be near it.

Actual fatalities from dog attacks remains low - but there are many cases of people being bitten, attacked and not dying. It's not a major issue but still an issue nonetheless that shouldn't be ignored. Man's best friend is fellow people, not dogs IMHO.

One tried, but epicly failed to open his tiny mouth wide enough even for my finger. The little nasty barking chihuahua. I love proper dogs though and will certainly have one at some point when the circumstances allow.

On the other hand I've been bitten by a black cat when it was getting in my way on the job. They are the ones to watch out for.

I do wonder if "dog" here is being used as a codename for something else that is on the mind of most people this year?!

What you are thinking of is of something with a 99.97% survival odds....

I'd sooner take a sneeze to my face from someone with what you are thinking rather than encounter a German Sheppard or any other dog off the lead.

Ia can't help thinking of some of the work I've done with working GSDs. Very different from your pet dogs

Probably no doubt - a working dog well trained isn't really a problem to anyone.

An off the lead big pooch jumping up on you on a narrow pavement nearly knocking you over into the path of oncoming traffic really is or someones off the lead pooch thinking your camera is dinner and trying to knock it off the tripod. IMHO it really should be a legal requirement to have them on leads in public places. It would solve practically all issues with dog on dog attacks, dog on person/child attacks etc if people just took some personal responsibility of the things rather than hide behind the dog owner BS sound bites.

I'd kind of hoped dog ownership would go out of fashion...but anything but.

Thanks Steve, I hope you and yours are doing well & that next year is easier with lots of interesting trips for you

Thanks - I hope so but I doubt it. I suspect 2022 will be where it is at. The events at Dover are just a taste of what is to come I fear. Random travel bans etc. No Pyrenees...no Alps, no nothing.

Still - I've gone medium format digital in the vain hope I am terribly terribly wrong about stuff. Plus Wex are doing good deals on stuff that I thought would really be beyond my price point.

when I was in Aus I worked part time training detector dogs for the AFP. Their GSDs that they used to catch people I wouldn't have wanted to be stopped by. Even with a bite suit on and being taught how. to 'take' the dog, it still hurt and was f*****g scary to be honest.

I don't disagree about responsibility, though that's true for most groups of people. Some are arses who give all a bad reputation. Most are decent doing the right thing. I hate when people feel they can give me advice or be rude because I have dogs.

anyway......

I tend to find I only give dog owners advice if their dog has caused me some trouble, like its ran at me, nearly knocked my stuff over etc. Usually to the effect, can you please put that dog on a lead.

That's usually when the soundbites happen...

That would be fair enough....Sometimes I feel like I and my dogs are treated public property....I have issued one or two soundbites when someone issues a pointless missive

Live and let live and all that. If folks dog's don't bother me, I won't bother them. As Jesus said "do as I would be done by" and a very apt message for Christmas.

The guard dog of choice in Russia is the Caucasian Shepherd, quite a handy looking animal. We had a lucky escape when shooting in a helicopter re-work facility on the outskirts of Moscow when we surprised one that was napping in an old Mi-8 fuselage.

Can imagine they'd be a bit more of a handful if gone feral.

Exactly, and it depends what they’ve been trained for. A friend had a narrow escape with a pair of border collies which shredded his overcoat when he incautiously visited (friendly visit) a sheep farmer after dark. No doubt the dogs were well trained — on sheep :(. He‘d never owned a dog and liked them but possibly misread the situation.
