I was wondering how many of you contribute pictures to the Wikipedia project (or have considered or would consider it)?

There is a list of photograph categories; click on a category to see the list of photograph subjects that have been requested. You might already have usable photographs that you'd be willing to release or perhaps you'd be willing to take a few photos of something that exists in your local area (even objects in your house).

Perhaps you already know of Wikipedia articles that would benefit from a photograph or two. If so, consider providing them if possible!

One of the things I'm hoping to do, when I settle on a camera and begin to master it, is contribute photos of my local area/university (Maastricht, Netherlands).

You might also like to peruse the Photography Wikiproject - it features some of the better efforts of the photographers involved. You don't have to join that project to help out though. Let me know if you decide to get involved and I'll try to clear up any queries that you may have. :)

copyright situation?

In order to use a picture on Wikipedia, the copyright owner has to be willing to release it under one of the copyrights that allow people to use it free of charge. There are a few variations, including the ability to stop commercial usage. I've only recently begun work on images (graphics rather than photographs (I previously stuck to text!)) and release my work under "Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike", which means absolutely anyone can use the image and modify it if they like, but they in turn must always tell people where the original came from (whether they modified it or not) and let other people use their modified version, if applicable. Some people release into the public domain (I don't recommend, since people can copyright their derivative works).

User:Fir0002, a guy about 20 years old from Australia, limits the resolution of images he uploads to Wikipedia so as to make them available under Wikipedia's preferred licenses while preventing others from blowing up the prints and selling them (he sells them from his website).

If you make money from your photographs, uploading certain samples to Wikipedia, in limited resolution if you decide, shouldn't do anything to damage your income. I figure it's just a nice thing to do for humanity!

Moving to Talk Photography section as this is not a picture thread for viewing.

I would also be interested in hearing, out of curiosity, why people might not be interested in doing this?

I really don't like the smell of this thread, I would never upload any of my images to wikipedia and never have done.

Basically Wikipedia is asking us to be "go fetch" people, and give them all the rights to the stuff we have taken.

No mate, sorry it is just not happening i am thinking

I'm with the Techno-Geek on this one.

WOW! What a welcome, T-G.

Not his first post - easily checked. And so what if it is?

Username? Hiding something? I can't say there are many usernames on here (or any forum) that fully describe the poster. Certainly not yours - or mine!

And you appear to be accusing the OP of stealing images, too?

Each to their own, especially in areas such as the posting of material on public forums. But there's no need to come over all ultra-critical and hostile just because you are someone who would prefer not to post on Wiki.

Personally, I don't think I would either. But Mr U Name makes a good case for posting low-res pictures on Wiki in a way that cannot have a detrimental effect upon anyone's income.

Welcome, Mr Name.

:agree: The images on wikipedia are generally around 400x600 pixels (with links to larger images on some of them)... if you load them to wiki at low res with a restricted license I can't really see a lot of harm. Plus you get a credit on there as well, which could certainly get you some exposure.

The username is irrelevant IMO, lots of people go by a user ID on here.

Oh my mistake, 2nd post then.

Yeah i come over harsh then, just username132 seems abit "off" to me really.

Ok, ok sorry for coming across to harsh

And yeah, I was known as TG in my years of school. So how you can make the statement "Certainly not yours" ? lol

And me being a Techno-Geek, DJ "hint" "hint" ?? I played as a DJ for a while

Tony

EDIT- Right i have edited my post, lets forget about this. I am out of this thread "WAVES" :)
