Hi folks,

I shoot with a Canon 30D and currently use a Tamron 17-50 and a Canon 50mm 1.8II. I am considering a wide (20-30mm) prime lens, primarily to cut down on weight when hiking and fishing. The 50mm is not wide enough for the job and the Tamron is a bit chunky. I am looking at the Sigma 30mm 1.4, Canon 28mm 1.8 or Canon 28mm 2.8. The speed of the lens is perhaps not a priority (though obviously handy) as the majority of my shots are taken in full darkness with flash. I suppose my main concern is a compact lens (eg the 50mm 1.8 is ideal) although very good IQ is desired. The Sigma looks a little large for example and would be at the top end of my budget.. Would very much like to hear some opinions!

Thanks

Although I have no experience with it yet, I plumped for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which should arrive on Wednesday.

I had the same choice dilemma as you apart from not wanting the Canon 28mm f/2.8. I needed something faster. It was a toss up between the Sigma and Canon but god comments for the Sigma swung it.

There's a 28mm 2.8 in the classified section at the mo asking £120 delivered which may interest you.

Have a look at my started threads or feedback that I got about the sigma and canon 1.8.

If it helps at all, I used to use a Siggy 30mm f1.4 on my 20D and I thought it was a cracking lens. Sharp from f1.4. The only complaint I ever had was that the focus ring felt a little gritty when focusing manually but I tried others and they felt the same so I assume it was just how the mechanism felt rather than a fault.

I have a Siggy 20mm f1.8 and it to is a cracking lens. It's not hyper sharp at f1.8 but good enough and it gets sharper quickly and is very sharp at f2.2.

Thanks for the replies. The more I think about it, a fast lens like the Sigma would be very handy, though it does seem pretty chunky and would therefore not be so much of a weight-saving lens. hmmmm
