Hi all

Anyone here regularly do what might be called environmental portraits with wide angle lenses? I mean 24-28mm on full frame. It can look great if done well and I am interested in some tips. I believe the subject is best placed in the centre of the frame, for example.

Thanks

I don't do much portrait photography generally, but I got this environmental portrait whilst in Slovenia recently. It's at 98mm but I was standing quite far away with my 6D. I was absolutely chuffed with the shot and it's made me want to do much more portraits.

I also love this one. It's not a conventional portrait seeing as you can't see the face, but I really like it.

A favourite of mine are quirky portraits taken up close with a lens likely wider than you intend, an 8mm fish eye on a crop sensor D7100. I'm always on the lookout for likely subjects when carrying the lens. I imagine the 24mm focal length you intend will be effective too.

Here are some examples.

@steveb didn't take Dave Cameron long to find a new job.

@jamiebonline the examples posted show 2 different styles. Which do you prefer or do you have something different in mind?

I have something a little different in mind although the second image is not far off except the subject needs to engage more with the viewer. I meant full body shot at the centre of the frame perhaps with the landscape spreading out around it. Shot at between 24 - 28 is pretty wide.

I used to use wider lenses a lot but not so much now.

One thing worth thinking about is that distortion can be used to deliberately exaggerate but personally I'm more of a fan of including context than going for deliberate distortion.

I took a shot of a dancer once and as I thought her legs were her best feature I shot from lower down than normal and at wide angle, she loved the result :D but not everyone will.

I absolutely love these , I'm going to look for an 8mm for my d7100.

Thanks for the inspiration.
