Hi, I bought recently 5D mark III and been looking for a wide angle lens for it. Sigma has 12-24 but it doesn't have a filter rim which is essential for outdoor photography. I know there's an attachment sold separately but it gets too expensive.
Any recommendations? I don't mind any brand (other than original canon lenses).
Thanks

You're moaning about the cost of a filter adapter for a lens when you've just bought a 2000£ body? Why don't you want the appropriate L glass to compliment that shiny new body?

To be honest I can't think of any of the top of my head that have a filter thread that isn't a Canon lens.
Can we ask why you don't want a Canon lens in the first place?

Carbonangel and stupar thanks for the response.. *** I bought an expensive camera n not in a position to invest in a L class lens.
I've used 10-20 sigma with my pervious cropped camera n it did a great job so I'm pretty happy with sigma lenses.
Any idea if tamaron or Pentax would have any?

What is your budget? I think your best bet would be a used 17-40 f4 L.
If you can scrimp together £400 you can easily get a decent one that is less than 3 years old.

The 17-40mm while not one of the best L series lenses, is pretty much ideal for the budget wide angle on full frame. You came from a 10mm at the widest so to maintain the same field of view on full frame you would need a 16mm. As the 16-35mm is probably out of your price range (based on you considering the sigma 12-14mm) the 17-40mm is pretty close.

Pentax don't make Canon fit lenses, and Tamron/tokina currently have nothing wide for a full frame body that I am aware of. If you can find one, there is the Tokina 17mm AT-X - but they are not that common.

I will stress though, put a decent lens on the camera otherwise you risk seeing a drop in quality rather than an improvement from your expensive camera.

It isn't a filter adaptor, you need to buy the 150mm Lee setup which comes in around £500 by the time you've bought a few bits.

17-40 can only be better than sigma 10-20

Not buying good glass for expensive body is a really wrong decision. It makes more sense to get glass and much cheaper old body instead.

This is like running a Ferrari on used vegetable oil

Very valid point. I compared my old 17-40mm with a Canon 10-22mm and the sharpness results were about the same. The 10-22mm is well regarded compared to the Sigma...

I have just bought a 5dmklll and it was suggest to me a to TOKINA 16-28 was a very good wide angle lens

Whilst the tokina 16-28 is reported to be a sharp lens (will reserve judgement having never tried one) it doesn't have a filter thread which I think is a pre requisite for the OP.

I still think the best WA lens for FF is the Zeiss 21/2.8. Even though I can understand that it may not be wide enough for some, it is a stellar lens for outdoor/landscapes. It has a 82mm filter thread so will take 100mm filters.

I think it's the best lens in its class (fixed wide prime) aside from the 15. Don't be put off by the fact that it's manual focus only, it's easy to use and beautifully built. A perfect partner for the outdoor photographer with FF.

Yes Scott I would settle for a Zeiss 21mm too, ultra sharp, beautiful colour rendition and a filter thread too. I think my bank manager would have something to say about the price though! :D

Prefer the 17mm TS&E myself

I'm guessing that the filters the OP wants to use are grads and a Pol? All others can be used - the Sigma 12-24 uses gels which are cut to size using the template provided and slipped into the holder behind the rear element. Grads and Pols can be bodged onto the front of the (fixed) hood using blu tak (or similar) or tape but that's not ideal. Not sure of any other FF lens that's tat wide - the Nikkor 14-24 comes close (and is an f/2.8) but ain't Canon fit (and has no filter thread IIRC...)

You would have thought by now Canon would have had a new version of the 17-40

I wouldn't - not sure they've released any new versions of their 'F/4 L' range with the exception of adding IS to the 70-200.

Try the Samyang 14mm F 2.8 ...if you get a good copy , it is very good for the price...it is fully manual...I use it and am quite happy...the distortion (minimal) is corrected by PTlens plug in for photoshop...

Canon 17-40mm would seem to be the obvious choice, weather proofed to match the body too

Woo Woo Woo... All these responses! I must say guys really thankful to all ur inputs though I must say it got me all the more confused lol.
Glad I have few choices, I'll read about them n see what matches my requirements.
I do agree with all who said mkIII deserves a good glass but let's hope I can afford one soon.

The 17-40mm f/4 L is an excellent lens for the money... I'm not sure why people complain about it because the images I get from mine are blisteringly sharp on my 5DMKIII and as an added bonus, it doubles up as a 'kit lens' for my 650D. :)

Could you post some 100% crops please?

Most of us could have bad copies whilst yours is brilliant, or we could simply have very different expectations. Mine is obviously not as good as 24-70 or 70-200mm.
I agree these are great on APS-C

Just checking this out has done me a huge favour. I had bought a Hoya CPL for my 12-24 in the knowledge that there was a filter thread on the extended lens hood. What I hadn't realised was that the vignetting made it impossible to use at anything other than 24mm!

The 17-40mm is pretty good for money. Its achille's heel is the corner sharpness.

But we can pixel peep all day if we want to play this game. The colour representation and focal length range is great on the 17-40, so I can totally recommend this lens.

Jonny, great shots!
Is this a sigma, canon or a tok lens?

Canon mate.

16-35L.

i love the wide angle it produces where it kinds of sucks you into the middle like a tunnel.

That look u cannot get on say a standard zoom lens of 24mm+

The Vignetting and Distortion is not bad at all.

The 17-40 should produce similar results. if you dont need the extra stop, get the 17-40.

i do need the extra stop sometimes
