Hi folks

I need a new wide angle lens for pro use close up motorsport ( motocross ) im after top end image quality and very fast focus to complement my 70-200 vr2 and D4 body. Need some recommendations from those who have and use wide angles. Im thinking 16-35 or 14-24 although i doubt it will get much use at f2.8.
Other option is i guess the Tokina 16-85 but i really want top IQ and i have a Tokina 12-24 on a DX body and its ok but then i look at images from my 70-200 and there miles apart..

Thanks all

If you can find one, the 17-35 is still a very sharp lens and much in demand (that is why Nikon continued to produce is after the 16-35 was launched) - it doesn't have VR, so is much more compact, has the same field of view (go and check it out) and is f2.8 rather than f4, which for isolation in a wide is a bit of an advantage. The 16-35 is the best option of 'modern' lenses. A good 17-35 would be a fraction of the price and I still use mine and have thought about the 16-35, until I put them side by side, the size difference is significant. You have to decide if that is worthwhile consideration.

yeah i have thought of the 17-35 as i dont need VR for sport, and as you say a fair bit cheaper. focus speed is very important for what i need though. Hard choice to make really...

12-24 Sigma? 14mm Tamron (for AF) or Samyang (for MF). 8mm Sigma for Fisheye!

The IQ on the Tokina 16-28 is pretty good imo/e. The AF was decent too, though I used it on a D6xx body. It kept up with kids at crimbo indoors ok fwiw ... it is well built too. I believe there may have been some sample variation, but mine was fine. Only reason I sold it was it wouldn't take filters and there wasn't any easily available adapters (Lee now do one ...). Be aware that the 17-35 can have af motor issues so check that if you get one, otherwise they are nice to use.
