After looking through many other member's 365 projects and seeing some great inspiring photos, I thought I'd start one myself.

I'm currently in my 3rd year at Portsmouth university (studying Civil Engineering) and have been 'seriously' into photography for about a year. I thought a 365 will help me improve my photography, try out different things and also document my life.

I use a Canon 40D (see sig for details) but have also started carrying my old Panasonic LX1 compact camera around with me to catch any shots during my everyday life.

So, it's the 1st day of a new year and decade, what better way to start than a drink to toast:

(I will be buying a Flickr Pro account soon, just waiting for the next installment of the student loan in a couple of weeks!)

I look forward to hearing people's comments throughout my 365, thanks for viewing!

DOF is good and I like the highlights, it just seems a little tight on the left hand side for me.

Thanks! I just hope I can keep up the enthusiasm as it goes on, especially with end of semester exams the last 2 weeks of Jan!

Namllihs, I would have liked to have been a bit wider, but I was at 18mm and resting the camera at the end of the table!

A bit of an abstract one today! On the motorway, going back to Portsmouth (uni term starts on Monday) and I tried to catch a few light trails from car head/tail lights as they went past.

First two days look good mate. I need to get my first days uploaded, it's going to be a challenge. I'm a student too, up in liverpool doing mechanical engineering. I'll have to keep check on this thread.

Nick

Good luck with the 365....there is no way I could have done it and a engineering degree! Good Luck and nice start!

Time for Serious Work to begin, with two pieces of coursework and three exams this month!

Cool shots so far, really like the simplicity of number 3.

I know how you feel about the exams and coursework, I've got exactly the same!!

Spotted this sign whilst walking back home today, it was the brightest thing on the road! I took this handheld and it was freezing (-2 degrees) but somehow it came out sharp!

Also, this is the first time in ages that I've used my old Panasonic LX1 compact camera, and I expect to be using it a lot more during this 365. It is small enough to fit in a pocket, yet has full manual controls, a nice Leica f2.8 lens, image stabilisation and shoots in RAW!

nice start...especially 2.

Thats quite cool!

You know, if you drew two dots on the light illumination the sign it would look just like a face!

Thanks, that's a good idea for any future light painting sessions (although it's far too cold to be setting up tripods and running around with a torch at the moment!)

Uni lectures were cancelled today because of bad weather. So, what better to do than go out with the camera? Here's a couple of For Sale signs covered in snow!

I have now also got a Flickr Pro account! :D

great shots so far, like the light trails.. good luck with it, and your exams!

So, it's been 1 week into the 365 project now and I thought it was time to experiment. I've seen similar shots to this and have wanted to try it out for myself, this is the best one of quite a few I took. I think it turned out quite well?

Uni was still closed, so we thought we'd venture out to do some food shopping and stock up on supplies (although it seems a lot of other people had the same idea!) Took this on the way to Asda whilst crossing the bridge by the train station. The train was not in use.

ooh, like the light bulb.. very clever!

great shot of the icicles too.. am sick of flipping snow now.. no bread, no salt.. no nothing in my local asda :(

todays shot is very nice. i think i would have converted to b&w...

Some cool (and cold) shots there, great work - honestly no way I could commit to a 365 project, I would feel I was shooting for the sake of shooting, having a week to get 'the shot' is still a challenge for me.

Good luck and keep it up ;)

Thanks, the light bulb one did take quite a bit of effort and I'll probably re-try it some time in the future.

The shelves in supermarkets were very empty, Tesco and Co-op were all out of bread and there were just a few in Asda. The queues for checkouts were crazy, a good half an hour wait! I suppose the weather is getting a bit annoying, especially with uni closed for most of last week and exams very (scarily) close.

I did get a few funny looks whilst taking the icicle photo, nobody actually said anything though (although I did have headphones on!)

Thanks, to be honest I'm not really a huge fan of b&w (although I like B&W speakers :D ) I only really b&w use it for a very select few photos, or gig photos where there is a lot of red light or ones which turn out overly noisy.

Thanks for your comments, yep I agree that the last few shots have been of the cold, don't worry- today's is a hot photo!

I decided to go for a 365 to challenge myself, and force myself to look out in everyday life for photo opportunities. I'm sure there will be times when I don't have any inspiration or am just too busy to take an interesting photo, and there will be quite a few filler shots!

Since the last couple of photos have been of cold things, I thought I'd add some heat! This is the heating element in the grill, glowing red hot!

Uni has re-opened today, but I don't have lectures on Mondays. I ventured to a friend's house to work on some coursework, but the pavements are covered in ice, so are very slippery and dangerous! There was nothing really to take photos of outside today, so when I got home I thought the volume knob on my Marantz SR7001 AV surround receiver looked pretty cool, so that's today's photo done!

Lectures started at 9am today. Because the pavements were all icy I thought it would be a good idea to get a taxi to uni this morning. Unfortunately it seemed many other people had the same idea, as they were all booked up until past 9! I ended up walking, and a usually 15-20 min journey ended up taking 35 mins!

There weren't any photo opportunities outside today, so when I got back home, I thought I'd get WALL-E to model for a photo!

I noticed this old MGB GT a couple of months ago, just sitting in somebody's driveway. It doesn't seem to have been driven in a while, so thought it deserved a picture!

Some nice pics there, I like the pics with the Panasonic... I think I may need to look at trying to find one of those handy to keep in a pocket :)

Well done

Thanks for the comments, I really like the Panasonic LX1 as a 'carry everywhere' camera, and because I am now shooting RAW exclusively on it, it allows so much more control over my images and more processing potential. Even shooting at ISO400 (it's maximum) gives acceptable results! And it doesn't sit unused in my drawer any more like it has for the past year! It may be old, but I wouldn't swap it for anything except an LX3 :D
I really like the WALL-E shot :) nice depth of field.
Thanks, I've also discovered people doing Wall-E 365's on Flickr, where he features in every photo for the year and getting up to all sorts! Quite a cool idea, maybe something to consider for next year...

Not the best start today. This morning upon taking my mug from the drainer, a glass that was wedged against it fell to the floor and broke :(

ooohhh I hate those mornings - its one thing after another when that happens.

Wall-E was a great shot btw, my fav so far, keep up the good work ;)

Just been catching up on these really liking #3 the pen & paperalso #7 the lamp.

Good stuff so far.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, on Edinburgh Road, Portsmouth (UK.)

Took this after my lectures today, on the way to the high street to do a bit of shopping. I'm not totally happy with this photo, it was quite a dull day and there was not really much inspiration around.

I purchased an espresso machine yesterday, I've wanted one for quite a while and saw this one at a reduced price, so I thought why not! Here it is in action, making an espresso in preparation for my cappuccino!

Following on from day 7's photo, Let There Be Light I thought I could build on it and take a series of photos. This is the kevlar woofer of my Bowers & Wilkins 686 speakers.

I wonder if anybody can guess what will be next?
