A novice and. know little about photography. I have two cameras main was an Agfa selecta 14 which is either a rubbish camera or user bought through Shareview(BT)£49 3yrs ago, Originally priced at £200+ wuold have demanded money back.

since given a Canon Powershot A480 easy to set and use and gives good results when zooming. Both are digital as if you didn't know.

I have no problem using the canon very good results zooming pictures clear in focus..

The Agfa, unless its me, can't seem to gett settings right for decent phot's its having a rest in the bag as the canon is giving better results.

Agfa settings Ascn(auto) photo setup 1AF assisbean on. Continuous AF on. Genaral setup lens 4..9-73.5mm 15x wide aspheric.Don't know what more to add. Whats the best setting for general photos.

I've taken some landscapes in past to pait in oils they been ok, not great, and out of focus if I zoom in to see a point in the photo. So long and short user fault or a crap camera? Now mostly use the canon. Video filming not bad that's all I can say on the Agfa by Red spot for Agfa.
Thanks

Hi Bob :welcome:

Welcome Bob :)

I'm struggling a bit finding my way through your question, if I can summarise what I think you're trying to say:
  • You have two cameras, an Agfa Selecta 14 and a Canon Powershot A480.
  • As a point-and-shoot the Canon is giving you better results than the Agfa.
  • You're struggling with the Agfa, feel it should be giving better results but you can't decide if it's a problem with the camera or user error.
I don't have direct experience of either of these models and don't have the manual for either. You've not shared any photos with us to see what the problem might be. This makes it hard to give more than general advice.

I'm going to assume that you just want to point the camera at the scene and press the shutter without having to think much about the controls. In which case the simplest of any automatic modes is usually the best place to start. I've found a picture of the camera with the mode dial..

I'd suggest using the "P" mode or the "SCN" mode. You should also check in the menus that any options to select the quality of the image are at the highest possible setting, that digital zoom is turned OFF, and any antishake/vibration reduction/image stabilisation is turned ON (I see there's a button fir that near the shutter button).

I would not use "ASCN" mode at the moment, usually that sort of advanced-scene mode can indicate that non-standard processing may be involved - perhaps some HDR or increased noise reduction and both of these can blur the details when viewed closely. If you can find your manual for the camera it may explain what this mode does.

If you could please share some sample images that show the problems your having, that would help us provide more detailed advice.
