Ok, I admit I`m fairly new to this photography lark, but why when photographing a pretty, half naked lady, do photographers use a plain (usually white) background? does adding scenery cost more money?! Surely by doing it that way, you`re only taking half a photo?

Sometimes I think 'active' backgrounds can be distracting, therefore a plain background will focus your attention on the subject, but not all the time though, as some situations will perhaps lend themselves to a none plain background.

Successful nude photography is all about form and light really ... hence the plain background.

Agree with above. A "white" background can be; white (high key), Black, any shade of grey in between, any colour with gel filters over lights, graduated light, pools of light, colours, etc, etc ......................

Not bad for just one surface I think. :)

I usually go for plain 'dark' backgrounds - usually a white backdrop that's unlit (I know that sounds wrong, but it works).
If you can get access to an infinity curve, they're the best.

Well it certainly distracts me! I guess its just one of those things I don`t like. Thanks for the replies though.
