Why won't my healing brush work?

In Photoshop, my healing brush doesn't work - it just paints black. Any suggestions anybody please as I am coming up to a period of editing where it will be crucial. I am updating my version of Photoshop to 22.5.4. I usually wait a while to see what is said. My Mac was upgraded internally in 2018 but I am on Catalina as have read problems exist for LR/PS users in Big Sur and Monterey and don't want to risk a snafu in the midst of this edit. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Is your Blend Mode set to Normal?

Have you got the right layer selected in where it is sampling from?

I looked... I realised I should have said the spot healing brush does not work - it just leaves black. This is how it looks:Screenshot 2021-12-18 at 14.54.00.png

Update: having tried to do as advised by a friend - reset and un-reset preferences - I came across a different solution; reset tool. Soo, I selected the brush, dropped the menu options in the small icon that appears and then selected the cog which enabled me to do an individual tool reset. It seemed to work - hopefully it will stick and still be fixed when I next use it.
 
ARGH! It hasn't stuck and now the tool reset doesn't work on it.

Any ideas please?
 
Have you got "sample all layers" ticked?
