Why is my Automation button greyed out?

I'm trying to follow this in PS E6 but when I get to:

Okay, now to make the HDR. Go into the File menu, then the Automate submenu, then select "Merge to HDR

.....I can't because the button is greyed out! Any ideas why please?
 
I haven't got elements but are you selecting them from bridge? if so have you got all 3 selected? are they raw or tiff? Wayne
 
It shouldn't make any difference if opening in Elements. I use CS3 but even when opening the program, irrespective of any files being open the Automate, Merge to HDR isn't greyed out. Maybe there is a problem with your preferences file.
 
Yes you could try resetting your preferences. Hold down CTRL+ALT+SHIFT as soon as photoshop starts to boot up, you should get the option to trash your prefs.

I've been opening them as RAWs. I haven't changed the preferences from default but tried the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT trick anyway.

Still the same:(
