Yes
I recently purchased a Canon 40D Kit & I am considering buying a telephoto lens. On the Camera Price Buster website the price of Canon EF70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM is £338, however the price of Canon EF70-300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is £755 (over double the price). This price difference is reflected on other camera web sites as well. Can anyone explain why this is so. What does "DO" stand for? & is this lens really necessary? Will I be better off going for a cheaper Sigma or Tamron? ( my budget would be between both of the above prices, around £500) This lens jargon is new to me, so advice would be gratefully appreciated. Regards, Misty

I'm sure i wont be the only person to recomend the canon 70-200mm range of lenses. The F4 Non-IS version of this fits into your budget. As for the 70-300mm D4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens, I'm not so sure. How ever I'm sure this Link will give you some of the answers you need.

The DO is very sturdy and well built and is designed to be small. When it came out, there was a clear gap between that and the non-DO 75-300. Now, if I was in the market for one of these, I thnk I'd get the non-DO 70-300 for £338.

The 70-300 IS produces shots similar to the 70-200's, but it doesn't have the constant aperture of build quality.
If you're looking to save money, I'm sure you'll be happy with the 70-300 IS.

Yes it does, the quality of the non DO is very good. I bought one last week:p:D

opps sorry beaten to it.......diffractive optical

CLICKY

Canon DO lenses are identifiable by having a green ring at the front instead of the usual red one. You're basically paying for some very expensive glass which pretty well eliminates chromatic aberration altogether.

...not to mention making the whole lens a LOT smaller.

The 70-300 DO is said to be quite soft wide open at 300mm so beware of that.

If you are someone who needs a small, light telephoto then the DO is probably a good choice :)

Thanks all for your replies. I am more informed now & will go for the non DO lens & by doing so I will have a smaller hole in my pocket  Cheers Misty
