Why I love RAW!

silly question, but how easy/difficult is it to get detail back on that sort of thing?

Very easy! I'm only familiar with ACR or Lightroom and they work in pretty much the same way (although Lightroom is prettier!). At a basic level you just have to play with a couple of sliders, 'Recovery' and 'Exposure' and all the lost detail is brought out. There's plenty more you can do to further enhance vibrance, contrast, blacks etc. but it's all very intuitive.

When recovering lost highlights, toggle on the little up arrow in the top right corner of the histogram, this is the 'highlight clipping warning' and shows the areas of the image that need recovering. Move the recovery slider up and the exposure down and watch how it affects the image with the clipping warning enabled.

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks a lot, I have elements 6 but I expect it will be there somewhere, at least I know what I'm looking for now!
