Why does the eraser not show the amount of pixels it will delete?

Hi, I hav was trieing to edit a picture today, and i needed to erase something, so i clicked on the eraser icon. Then it usualy shows a circle showing the amount of pixels it was going to delete but all it showed was 5 dots? can anybody help how do i get it back to showing the circle?
 
It may have resized. You can use the [ and ] - the square brackets not the curved ones - on the keyboard to resize most tools (brushes etc) including the eraser.
 
What software?
