Why do DSCL crop in the most annoying way?

Just received some photos [10 x 8] back from DSCL.

Why do they crop in the most annoying way as to completely crop out one person on the far right of the group.

Why don't they print the whole photo? Or crop on the other side where no one is stood.:shrug:

This has happened before and its annoying me now.:(
 
If you are ordering 10x8's you need to crop to the same ratio first.
 
it's an automatic process... they couldn't print the whole photo because then it wouldn't be 10x8, or if they printed it small, what kind of border would they put around it, etcetc.

crop them before you export and upload them, then you'll get it right, rather than an automatic crop...
 
You can also crop it during the upload process if you used their website service thingy..
 
It's because you are not sizing the images before sending them Sam. DSCL are not cropping them, they are just printing what you have sent I'm afraid (I did it the first time too so it's how I know what the problem is)

You need to save your files at the size you want them to print before sending them.
 
Did you send the images to them resized to 10x8?
If you did you wouldn't have the problem.

The printer I assume is computerised so it'll just crop half and half, I doubt some person looks individually through the thousands of images sent into them.

I need to be more careful when sorting them out.
 
Ahh , I had same problem with costco , but I blamed them on not being a proper photo lab , will make mental note to self for next time:thumbs:
 
It's an easy enough mistake to make, al least that's what I told myself ;)
 
Funnily enough I received some 10x8s & 12x8s from DSCL yesterday, every one of them had been cut a couple of mm too short on one side - very annoying! Images had been correctly resized to 3000x2400 pixels @ 300dpi but the 8" edge was a couple of mm short on all photos. A couple had symmetrical white borders so it looks really obvious. I ordered several other sizes too, but those were all fine.
 
All photolab printers have to magnify your image by a few % (I have found on my Frontier it is 3%) - the reason for this is the paper doesn't have perfect registration - so the image is scaled up a little to allow for this. If it don't do this you'd get tiny and possibly uneven white borders on one or more sides.

It doesn't cause any major problems except when you put on thin borders or put text very near the edge.

We always recommend that you put a safety margin of 4mm round your design - and put no text in that.... and just be aware for thin borders.

You must also remember that when you frame a print the edge will be hidden by the rebate of the frame, or behind a mat - and if you mount a print onto board, framers often need to trim a couple of mm off each edge so that the gluesheet used dosen't come into view....

The biggest problem from this magnification is if you use album overlays with multiple images, particulary if you use a thin keyline. We have a solution for these however....
