Why do cargo ships have steering position at rear ?

Yes
I'm sitting on the N.E coast of England and sea traffic is really high but one thing that gets me is why is the driving ( I'm sure it's not called driving) is at the rear, Surely it would be better if the steering position was at the front but I'm guessing there is good reason ! The only one thing I can think of is to stop the Bridge diving into the sea under heavy waves !

Not all do, but most do as it gives them sight of the loading areas from the bridge, also when things were all mechanical it's the shortest simplest route to the engines and rudder for control.

Here's an example of a more modern container ship (the containers would restrict forward view) where the bridge is towards the front.
