I read a few of the for sale posts where potential buyers ask/insist on the original box being supplied. I've always been curious about this.

Does it reflect the sales value or suggest that the previous owner was more caring about their equipment? What does the item being boxed add to the sale or value of an item?

As someone who has been quite transient throughout most of their life and simply isn't in a position to horde boxes, I think not keeping boxes could potentially devalue gear that I sell even though I do look after it all.

I suppose some may be looking at future resale values, items with the original box, can fetch a premium. I suppose if packaged in the original box, it may make shipping safer, maybe.

Personally I don't care, original box or otherwise so longs its in good nick, and a good price too.

Slightly better resale because...

Less likely to have been stolen
‘More original’
More ‘authentic’
Impression of better looked after
More ‘complete’
People are anal
Doubles as a ‘safe’ storage box for lens!

Same with high end watches, always the original box for me please.

Boxes do make the item more desirable than unboxed for some reason, if you look on the bay there are 100s of boxes for sale
