No greatest drummer just a few I have liked over many years

Chad Smith
John French
Robert Heaton
Michael Shrieve

Dave

Its a tough call between Cozy Powell and Carl Palmer

Too many,

Danny Carey (Tool),
Gavin Harrison (The Pineapple Thief, Porcupine Tree),
Cozy Powell (Rainbow),
Jon Bonham (Zep),
Stuart Copeland (The Police),
Keith Moon (The Who),
Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac),
Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy),

I could go on....................

Except that in every poll of drummers (actual professional drummers, not us the greater public) on who the best drummer is - Mr Bonham comes out on top :)
Yeah but what do they know?

But yes I have to agree he's "up there"

What I find curious in this thread, is the drummers and the groups they play(ed) for.

I guess they don't make them like that anymore (y)

They pretty much all started before electronic drum machines - might be a clue there

They also were not robots - for instance listen to drumming from AC/DC and then compare it to someone like Ian Paice - Paice's timing is still spot on, but there is much more intepretation, rather than the metronome approach. AC/DC have a solid rhythm section everytime a note is played its the same as last time, whereas other bands have more 'swing'.

Also Bonham and Paice (and many others) were masters of following the flow, rather than driving it relentlessly.

Good point, although I was also making reference to the groups as much as the (their) drummers.

Neil Peart, Danny Carey and Gavin Harrison (in no particular order…….)

Bonzo, the Loon or Neil Peart. IMO.

Craig Blundell will be on, or at the top of, that list in the not too distant future ;)

I nearly mentioned Zak Starkey, actually...

According to John Lennon, Ringo wasn't the best drummer in the Beatles let alone the World!

Jason Bonham made a reasonable fist of filling his Dad's throne.

Japanese drummers - Stomu Yamash'ta

Maybe not the best individual drummers, but quite a feat to get 1000 drummers playing the same beat.

Gene Krupa deserves an honourable mention, and Charlie Watts as well.

Bonham is one of my favourites, too. As an aside if you haven't come across Zepperella, they are a tribute band whose drummer makes a fair fist of a Bonham copy. For example here's When The Levee Breaks.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH-_9cwdLug

I mean, isn't this VERY subjective? For me it's Nicko McBrain

I love "Go", for years I only had part of it recorded from Alan Freeman's show on Radio 1 when I was a student (this before there was a WWW never mind youtube) until I finally found the LP in a second hand record shop. Michael Shrieve played drums on that though.

I'm going to add Joe Morello to the mix. Everyone remembers the piano and saxaphone on "Take five", but none of it works without the drums,
