For quite a while now I had quit using flickr and just adding images directly into posts; but the size requirement really does limit quality, and often the forum reduces the IQ even further. I think a lot of times it doesn't really matter much as images aren't (usually shouldn't be) only about technical details. So now I'm wondering if it's worthwhile going back to using flick'r instead, even though the auto generated image is also often reduced in IQ.
Here's an example of what I mean... downsampled to 1024 and IQ at 95% to meet forum requirements.

This is a very hard crop; I still had to reduce the IQ to 95%, and this isn't even that great of an image to start with in terms of detail/IQ.

Flickr; allows for a bit larger image. And in this case a bit higher IQ/detail; but still reduced.
