This is probably posted to an incorrect forum, so please move if needs be.

I'm having a local gallery exhibit some of my work for two weeks towards the end of April. But they have asked me to hold a Preview Evening, this is great, but who do I invite? To be brutally honest most friends and family are really not interested in my bizarre photography. So would like to invite people who would actually be interested. The exhibition is a joint venture (me and another photographer).

It's a local exhibition, so certainly local art societies will be invited, but what about local journalists and such?

Anyway any ideas on how to make up numbers would be great.

Can't help with your question but lovin' your portfolio

If you can get a local jouralist to come a long I would have thoght that would be a good move. If not write a short peice yourself to and send it in to them.

Also ask the gallery if they can help getting peopel to attend regualr clients etc

I love the images in your portfolio

First off, congratulations on getting an exhibition!

Maybe send something to your local art college, especially if there is a photography course there?

I don't know whereabouts you are located, but in the northwest, there is Redeye that is a good way of publicising events and networking. Maybe have a look at www.redeye.org.uk, and see if there is something similar in your area?

Local Press, national photography and art magazines, venue's mailing list, local photographers and societies. I think if you aim the invites at a named person rather than an organisation the personal and 'flattery' approach may be more successful.

And I agree, a good portfolio, good luck.

Thank you so much for all you kind words. Means a lot, it really does.

I will post some images up of the actual event. Will definitely try the personal touch and send 'named' invites. The art College idea is a great one too.

Thanks again everyone X

Hum Farringdon isn't far from me, I'll have to pop along and have a look

Your friends and family will come along because they are your friends and family! I had an exhibition last year and invited pretty much everyone I knew to the preview evening and it was really surprising who actually came; A lot of people that I don't know that well came with their whole family, yet some of my best friends couldn't be bothered.

There must be local photo societies in the area, students from all manner of art courses may also come and see 'how it should be done'.

The preview, usually with drinkies and nibbles, is for anyone that's helped you get this far (family, friends, supporters, those that have already bought/commissioned work from you, gallery patrons, anyone that's expressed support via Facebook, etc.) and anyone that you want to help you to get further in the future (press, local art buyers, gallery regulars, etc.).

I'd like to see if I can come (generally, rather than trying to cadge entry for the preview). Your images look fascinating.

Use social media to promote it... follow a bunch of people you admire on Twitter... then hopefully they'll follow you back... publicise the opening, and then hopefully they'll come if they're local enough, or they may even re-tweet it too. Invite other photographers, artists.
