To be honest I'm not at all sure I understand white balance although this hasn't been a problem in the past as my results have been ok just by leaving my Nikon D80 on white balance auto. I've now got a problem however as suddenly all the photos taken are washed out and this seems to be related to white balance as I can improve the shot by adjusting the camera setting but never to the point where it's a it should be. I assume there is something wrong with the camera but has anyone got any suggestions?

You need to set the white balance for the light source or temperature that your working with  though if you shoot in RAW/NEF then you can make a custom white balance in editing at no degradation to the quality of the image

Put it basically your aiming to cancel out any colour cast from the light source to show the true colour of the scene/subject

Welcome to TP

I've moved this over to the appropriate section of the forum for you Mike, you may get more answers here!

Thanks guys. From what you're saying Matt I think it confirms that the camera has devoted a fault as I've used it for more than 3 years with no problem & now I've got weird washed out pictures.

maybe, but could you post a couple of images with EXIF intact

Washed out pictures would suggest an exposure problem rather than an issue with white balance. From your description it sounds as if your photos may be over exposed. Do you have exposure compensation dialled in?

As boyfalldown has said, it would aid in making a diagnosis if you could post up an image with the exif intact.

Yes, more likely over exposure.

Wrong white balance will just result in a blue or yellow cast.

That's great guys, thanks so much for your advice, this is the first time I've used TP and the response to my problem has been fantastic! As regards the problem I think you all right as I've just taken some test shots progressively stopping the exposure down and the results get back to what I would expect. Unfortunately I can't post a photo as I'm writing this from Madiera and only have my iPad with me so have no ability to download from the camera. We are due to do an off road exploration of the centre of the island tomorrow so your advice as saved the day as I can at least use the camera so many thanks for that. A regards the problem it would seem as if something has gone wrong with the chip controlling camera settings as I can't think of any other reason why this should happen can you. Maybe this is the excuse I've been looking for to upgrade to a D700! Many thanks again for the advice.
Mike
