I have enjoyed photographing a couple at a their wedding and feel I would enjoy more with people as the subject. The kit I have at the moment will have to do for now, but I feel another lens would make the images potentially more appealing in the situations I would like to use them in.

I would potentially like to do a bit of home studio stuff, inside venue stuff, and a little outdoor too.

I realised when I attempted the wedding that the 50mm was still a bit too long for some of the inside stuff. I also realised that having a zoom would have opened up many more opportunities.

With that in mind I feel the following lenses may potentially be a useful addition to my gear.

Canon 24-70 f2.8 or a 24-105 f4

My cameras area a Canon EOS700D and a EOS5D mk1
I also have a 85mm f1.8 prime, plus two kit zooms.

Any advice from you folk would be appreciated.

For the indoor stuff, IMO the extra stop that the f/2.8 gives you will be more useful that the extra reach of the slower lens. It'll also allow shallower Depth of Field (DoF) should you want/need it. Bear in mind that this is a general recommendation - I don't shoot Canon!

Thanks Nod. I am leaning toward the f2.8 for the inside work, and also I think the shallow depth of field is a huge plus as I enjoy its effects.

I suppose a lot depends on which camera a zoom is going to be mounted on. 24mm on a Canon APS-C is equivalent to 38mm on FF, is that wide enough for you? If not maybe look at the Tamron or Sigma 17/18-50mm f2.8's. If mounting a zoom on the 5D I suppose you'd want a wide aperture prime on the APS-C camera but then depending on the focal length you went for you could lose out on some of the shallow depth you like.

Just things to think about.

Or, seriously, ditch the Canon kit and go for something more modern in MFT or APS-C mirrorless. My reasoning being that I had a 5D and once I got something newer the 5D image quality suddenly didn't look so good to me, especially the dynamic range and noise performance. A more modern MFT or APS-C set up might very well improve on the IQ of both of your cameras and be worth at least looking at and pricing up. If it's too much money, then fair enough.

Thanks woof woof. My potential aim is to go mirror less, but due to the cost I intend to stick with what I have for now. If I can purchase lenses that will work on the camera I may purchase in the future then it's worth investing.

i would go with the 2.8 if you can afford it - twice the price of the f4 (£500 vs £250 ballpark looking at mpb) but with an older body like the 5d classic that extra stop is really useful - also the 2.8 is a pro lens so probably better build quality as well

You might find the Tamron 24-70 at a better price than the Canon, and it has IS where the the Canon doesn’t. And that might be a help with the older sensor in the 5d.

But I’ll warn that a FF standard lens on a crop body isn’t for everyone, so you may find you’re using it exclusively on the FF body. But as a 2 camera setup, keeping an 85mm on the crop body with the zoom on FF might work for you.
It’d work for me.
