I have just been the lucky recipient of a juicy tax rebate and am in the market for a wide/standard zoom lens to replace the kit lens I got with my camera.
Been looking at...
•17-40
•24-70
•24-105
All L lenses just wondering if anyone has any good/bad opinions on any.

Cheers

If on a crop (on iPhone so can't see what camera you have) then none of those!

The Canon EFS 17-55 IS f/2/8 would be the one I'd look at.

I am on a crop...but am hoping to move to full-frame by the end of the year so had planned to start investing in ef lenses hence the L's.

In that case the 24-105 would be the FF equivalent, though it's not as good.

The 17-40 on an crop will be a standard zoom range but on FF it becomes a UWA.

It depends ultimately which focal range will suit best, and if you really are going to make the FF plunge any time soon.

if your your buying new lens & planning FF eventually then there great investment & worth while purchase, you wont be disappointed with any of these lens, on crop or no crop body they produce amazing results.

But they perform very differently!

the EF 24-70L is a cracking lens but if you want to go wider the look at the Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6. This is the only non canon lens that I have and its a cracker.

I don't think I need any wider to be honest. I have access to a tokens 11-16 through a friend whenever I need wider so these three are my options I thinks!

The 24-105 seems to come on a lot of high end cameras as kits, is this just because of the slightly larger range!?

The tokina 11-16 isnt compatible with FF.

No but it is at the moment with my crop sensor. If I bought every single lens I want (see think I need) then I'd quite frankly be on the breadline! I am trying to buy a good lens which can replace my kit lens doing most of what it can do with a frankly much better optic...there is going to be a trade off somewhere!

You might find the 17-40 too wide then, I'd suggest the 24-105 for similar range to a standard zoom on an FF body but it's not the fastest of lenses.

Personally I'd go for the 24-70 as it has the added benefit of f/2.8. Though the 24-105 does have IS....

The choice is really between having the extra stop (and shallower DOF) or the f/4 but with more range!

Performance wise the 24-105 is almost as good as the 24-70 and more versatile.

The 24-105mm f4 is a good walkaround lens on FF, but the 24-70mm f2.8 has more than just the edge over the 24-105mm and no need to look at the MKII version, as the MKI is just as good and 1/2 the price (used a little bit more)

Think the 24 mm might be slightly wide on my crop camera until I get a new FF. Anyone have experience of 17-40L or sigma equivalent?! New Sigma 50mm is very impressive but would like the weather resistance of L.

Unless you're going to be shooting lots of low light photos then IMO the 24-105 f4 L would be best. I got it with my 5D2 and used it extensively on my 7D. I've now got a 5D3 and 60D and the 24-105 and my 70-200 2.8 IS L have to be the 2 most used lenses I have at the moment. And they do get swapped around regularly still. The 24-105 has great IQ, quick AF speed and the IS is great, and on top of all that it's nice and lightweight too.
