Hi folks. This is my first post so i hope i haven't made any mistakes and it actually appears. I am about to buy a Nikon wide angle lens and can't make my mind up between the 14-24 f2.8 or the 17-35 f2.8. Has anyone tried both of these lenses, if so which do you prefere and why. Any input would be welcome

My only advice would be to try out both and see which one suits your needs better. There are rental companies if you want to play with them for a bit longer.

These are two very different lenses and which one you choose will probably depend on whether you really need the 14-16mm width, or whether you might (at some stage) wish to use filters with the lens.

I would recommend that, if you haven't already done so, you should read these two reviews from Ken Rockwell. He's used both extensively and (unusually, for him) most of what he says about them is mirrored by what folks here on TP have to say:

14-24mm

17-35mm

I went for the 17-35mm, as I use filters a lot for landscapes, but I'd love to own the 14-24mm as well, as the sharpness and lack of distrotion are quite amazing for such a wide lens.

They're two different flavours of 'great', IMHO :D.

I love ultra-wide angle photography and I'm not too bothered about using filters since most of my horizons are rarely flat enough for a ND grad not to affect part of the ground. So, the 14-24 was my choice, but it's not for everyone. My suggestion would be that you should try both for yourself rather than letting others dictate what you prefer.

They're both great lenses. Whichever one you pick, you won't be disappointed with the images it produces - so long as it does what you need. As Naboo32 says, which one is right for you will probably depend on whether you really need the 14-16mm width, or whether you might want to use filters. (Or whether you'd be terrified that that huge bulbous front element would get damaged!)

The 14-24 is an ultra sharp and ultra wide angle lens.
Bear in mind that it cannot accept filters (unless you want to mess about with blue tack or similar).

The 17-35 is also a cracking lens.

I'd decide on the basis of how wide a lens you want.
