Hi..Im using a nikon D5100 and would like some advise on which would be the most suitable wide angle lens for landscape work
Thanks

Hi Stu,
I assume the D5100 is an APS-C sensor like my Canon D450. I have the Sigma 10-20mm and it's great for wide angle landscape work. I looked at Canon ( too expensive) and was tempted by the Tokina which starts at an impressive 8mm but the Sigma is good and low f-stop isn't important for landscape work.

Yes my nikon is APS-C censor and im currently using a sigma 18-200mm OS lens which im very happy with..excellent quality lens
Will look at the sigma 10-20mm you mentioned
Many thanks
Stu

I have a Nikon 12-24 f4, great lens as far as I'm concerned. They go for around the £400 mark used, so I don't know whether that would fall within your budget or not.

the reviews I have read recommend the tokina 11-16 for nikon crops and the canon efs 10-22 for the canon boys

First question has to be Budget?

Then, my suggestion would be to head for a decent sized retailer who may stock a few options and try them out for yourself. Some ultra wides introduce heavy distortion (not ideal for landscapes) while others may display chromatic aberation (purple fringing in areas of high contrast). Some copies of some lenses may have problems (as reported with Sigmas). Try and test the copy you will be leaving the shop with, that way, you'll be buying a known quantity and if it develops a problem later, you'll be able to return it to the shop and get the problem sorted far more easily than trying to get satisfaction at long distance.

How wide do you want go? I only ask as many gravitate to ultra wides for landscapes but they're not necessarily ideal. You have to work much harder at your composition to make sure there is plenty of interest and not just plenty of tiny stuff. Great when it all comes together but very dull when it doesn't. Ultra wides also make using a polariser a bit odd. Something to consider.

If it is to be an ultra wide, I've not used anything finer than the tokina 11-16. Superb in almost every way except that its range means that its never anything but extremely wide so not really a 'walkabout' lens!

If you are happy with something longer, how about a Nikon 16-85? Still quite wide when you want it to be but a really useful range for more composition options. Good iq too though a little bit of distortion to deal with (rarely an issue for landscape).
