Hello all.
I am going to use my D7000 tethered to my laptop, and shooting into Lightroom (3). I have tried it, and it works fine, albeit fairly slow from capture to display, with a delay of around 2 secs.
My question is about the cable.
I was using a very short usb cable, as it was all I had at the time, so I need to get a longer one.
Does it make any difference which USB cable I use, and is there a maximum length of cable before data gets lost or corrupted?
Thanks in advance.
Gary.

Generally USB cables should be 3m or less though at a push you can use 5m (but it might work intermittently)

My D90 won't work with anything more than 4m of cable but the D300 is okay up to 6m - I get about 5% failures. I guess it depends on the "strength" of the interface electronics in the camera.

Get an active cable. They cost a couple of quid more than passive ones.

I got a 5m one from Maplins and it works a treat.

This is what was in my mind, but wasn't sure

i am using a D7000, so I would think it would be more like the D300, but can't be sure.

I have seen these, up to 10 mtrs, but wasn't sure whether the "active" part would in some way damage the camera. This is probably the best option for me.

Thanks for the replies.
Cheers.

The other option is to use a powered USB hub ?

Do you mean a hub which plugs into the mains?
Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm a bit ignorant !!
Any links to a decent one?
Thanks again,
Gary.

No. The active bit (presumably) draws power from the USB socket on the computer. Works perfectly.

5m passive cable - I lose connection every 20 mins or so. 5m active - never misses a beat. 20 quid, job done.

Personally I'd steer clear of hubs. That's 3 cables. And a power socket.

Yes mate something like this, though i haven't used that exact one so i don't know how good it is ?

Have to agree with Jonathan. Don't want any losses ( don't know if that is a realistic expectation though).
Think I'll go with a 5 mtr active cable and see how I get on.
Thanks for the help.
Cheers,
Gary.
