Hi all,
Its time to upgrade the tripod, my camera and lens weigh 8lbs one of my heads weighs 3.5lbs, my manfroto is a little unstable when its all on at the same time, I was thinking of a Gitzo GT2931EX or GT2330EX however having read some reviews there's mixed opinions. I like to take wildlife and macro shots can anyone offer advice as to which is the best way to go,
confused:help:

If you like taking wildlife, do you have or are proposing to have long primes and/or zooms? If so, something like the Gitzo GT3540 XLS will be absolutely ideal for your needs.

I am lucky enough to eventually have one, and is well worth getting one if you want to buy just the once. I bought 7 times, admittedly didn't have the money until recently for one of these, but now I have it, this will be the only tripod I'll need...

As for macro, again this tripod will be ideal, but it isn't the lowest on the minimum height stakes, so you may have to invest in another if you do extreme low ground macro. For table height and a little lower, the GT3540 XLS would be perfect..

Thanks for that, I do have 300mm f2.8 and wildlife will become the main subject macro even though i enjoy it will always be second

Considering the maximum height and the tubing diameter, the Gitzo is remarkably light.

I only usually tend to use three leg sections, which gets me to eye level (with ballhead and camera attached) I'm 6 foot. The 3540 XLS has four three leg sections, so for me it's very handy to have a section in hand for extreme perpectives/composition etc.

Apparently, the difference in weight between the 3 section 3540 LS and the XLS is only 300 grams

The Redsnapper tripod and ballhead also seem to get rave reviews on this site, and both can be had for about £100 IIRC..

I would say gitzo i use a 1348mk2 and a 5530 buth have diffrent jobs but are superbly built, i have had the 1348 for quite a while now its my everyday tripod with an RRS BH-55 LR ball head

Thanks for the help I think budget may be a factor, I will look at redsnapper though had'nt thought of them at all:bonk:

No probs. Another brand that really IMHO is under priced is Giottos. Not sure they still make them, but they were doing a tripod plus fluid ballhead for about £150.

Excellent VFM :woot:
